Wife Beaters?

Out & about walking the dogs this afternoon I bumped into an old skool friend of mine who happened to be married to a mate of mine for a few short years.

I distinctly formed the impression that she wasn't entirely comfortable with the encounter, but persevered nonetheless. The dogs seemed to be getting along just fine & as I've always enjoyed her company I kept up the conversation for old times sake.

I've known this gel since we were at infants & for a brief period she was one of the 'hangers on' when we hit puberty & started this incredible journey of smoking good weed, riding fast motorcycles & generally laughing at all of those who didn't.

We eventually sat down on a bench, talked about many of the things we had in common & then got down to the nitty gritty. "So why'd you leave him" I asked?

"Because he'd down a few pints & we'd go home & he'd kick seven bales of shit out of me". "Sometimes it was just because something hadn't gone his way & sometimes it was just for fun".

She told me about one night I cracked one of my better jokes & she couldn't help but laff out loud. He later blacked her eye 'cos we're obviously having an affair & she thinks my jokes are funnier than his !

I never knew this. I'm not in denial about the behaviour of any of those I choose to call 'mate' & nor do I judge them. Yet I never had this chap down as a wife beater. Thinking about it all this evening, lots of things begin to fall into place.

So, what I am asking the internety's is . . . . Is he still worthy of 'mate' status???
