I've been a little worried about using NSAIDS, in my case low-dose Ibuprofen (200mg) to control some pain after training, having read about the possibility of it actually decreasing muscle growth and strength potentials.
I don't take them just to get rid of the muscular aches from training, which I actually enjoy, but with my bone and joint injuries, I sometimes need them for pains in these areas, where NSAIDS seem to be the only things that work effectively.
After some training sessions, I don't seem to need anything. I don't take them pre-training to enable harder sessions, and I only use them when I get those nasty, deep and persistent aches in bones and joints, for which low-dose Ibuprofen seems very effective.
I have also found an article* that suggests the detrimental effects of NSAID use is more marked in younger individuals, and also, since I am training for general health and muscle growth rather than to competition levels, I think the irregular low-dose usage that I indulge in is probably not too harmful to my health or to the kind of gains I am trying to achieve.
What thinks you?

I’ve seen a good few of my colleagues take pain killers before training in a bid to aid harder training.
Every one of them to a man has ended up doing some damage somewhere along the line over time, even if it has not been major damage.
Myself, I use my pain thresholds as a way of limiting the intensity/mildness of my training session.
Basically: if I hurt, I stop doing that.
My frail old body complains every time I train ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

But with most exercises, I can go to failure without major pain, and rarely have pain immediately after a workout, more fatigue and muscular aches. I don't take pain relief for just DOMS either. And I've already said I don't take anything to enable harder workouts. I'm also quite fastidious about allowing full recovery between workouts.
It's just that sometimes I have to take Ibuprofen when pain in joints and bones arises later following a workout.
Take yesterday for e.g. I did a hard session on pecs and triceps, maxed out on all the major exercises I did in regard to sets and reps. That was mid afternoon. It wasn't until later that evening that my damaged arm and shoulder started to hurt. So I took 1x200mg Ibuprofen. Later in the night, I woke up from the pain again and took another. Today I've been fine, but starting to hurt a little bit again now, so might need another tonight, but I woudn't expect, from previous experience, to need any more tomorrow.
This doesn't happen after every workout either, even if I push myself hard. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

NSAIDs? High dose?
I guess the conclusion I would draw is that if you're using them at low dose and not in a regular manner, it's probably not a problem. And if you're only using low dosage, probably it wouldn't mask signs of impending serious problems? I still wouldn't take pain killers before hard exercise though. If it was in competition, I'd feel like I was cheating, myself as much as other competitors. But I'm just doing stuff for general fitness, so there's no competition driver, and can accept my limitations. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
