Exercise Cerberus is on so lots of Military traffic. Notable absence of heavy armour though, guess we can't afford to run them anymore Laughing I find it best to pull over and let the convoys past, they have a habit of veering about as the drivers fall asleep/wake up.

Had a stab at riding through woodblocks, requires a bit more concentration watching for low branches. The dry looking leaf litter can also be covering slippery mud.

Managed to not fall off today, despite yesterdays torrential rain making everything a bit slippery. Was running a lower pressure in the rear than last time, it seemed to help.

I seem to have some luck when it comes to weather and days off. I headed to a much smaller bit of the plain between Shipton Bellinger and Tidworth today, the area is small but there are alot of tracks to explore and most are not metaled so a bit more challenging.

I think I may have strayed on to a Bridleway here, it wasn't posted as such though. Killed the engine when I encountered horses and the riders smiled and waved so no harm.

My previous thoughts that compacted clay/chalk/flint is the worst surface known to man have changed. The mud was very slippery and the rocks stick up lots more than the picture really shows. 1/2 a mile of this and 2 involuntary dismounts where the rear lost it, slid on to the rocky stuff to the left, caught the bashplate and down I went.

Up with the crows today, I had an urge to ford a small river so off across the plain I went.

This was the small river I wanted to try fording, typical the day I want to have a go the army remember to lock the gates! The guy in the VW in the background had a driver and bucket of golf balls, guess it's cheaper than the driving range!

FV432, poor buggers must be snapped on exercise at 0830 on a Sunday. Suprised the old turds are still in service they are ancient. They had modernised them over a decade ago when I was in and they were still crap then.

You can find lots of little forward operating bases constructed from HESCO in unexpected places on the plain. This is a sangar which means it's a post from which young Privates have to sit pretending to watch for a pretend enemy while freezing their balls off and listening to people in the area behind it eating, smoking and snoring.

Yes, accelerator, gear range selector and 2 sticks that brake the corresponding track to steer. If you do a "Drive a tank" day they usually use these. A few years back you could buy one for under £10k, you need Category H on your licence to drive one on the road.

The upgraded Bulldog variant has a yoke (like a steering wheel), and brake + accelerator pedal (as does Warrior and Challenger 2) making it all much easier but you won't find them in Civvy hands yet.

We used to call them 43-poo or 43-skip, as an armoured infantry battalion we were largely Warrior based but had a load of these things as C&C vehicles, med vehicles, mortar carriers and other roles outside of the rifle sections. Not well regarded as they were clapped out old turds that broke down a lot and don't stand a chance against modern weapons. In Iraq in '07 when it got rather shooty we didn't even use our allocated skips and were purely Warrior based, though some mechanised units were using them but they didn't have to go get blown to hell every night.

I ended up using 330mm Hagons (courtesy of Easy-X they started out on his DT project). I have some 320's too (stock 300mm) but figured try the biggest 1st. Steering has changed alot, sharper, more precise feeling. Probably less stable at speed but it can't do speed Laughing . Nicer ride now off road the old ones were too firm.

Ali rear mudguard next but that involves cutting and drilling and so maybe/maybe not this week.

First time I'd made it out for a while and by golly it was cold. Didn't mind that so much but having not ridden for a few months and with the roads through the villages flooding out nicely, everything seemed a bit sketchy today.

Was quite busy round there; given we're at absolute megadeath with the Rona I was expecting it a bit quieter but nope, the forest was heaving.

Saw an advert. 20 Hotwings for £5.99. At this price it becomes essential shopping, so made an essential journey to my nearest KFC (about 9 miles over Byways). This bike is great in Drive-Thru's, the exhaust exits pointing at the window, blipped the throttle and watched the guy taking payment jump about 3 foot in the air Laughing

I'm mostly where I want to be with the bike now. Long term I need to improve the footpegs and probably rebuild the gearbox with trials gears but that can wait. Also seat needs some sheepskin, those saddles need a layer of padding to be comfy.

First use of a new helmet. I wanted something with a peak, sunvisor and a central tab on the main visor to make it easy to operate with either hand. It's an LS2 MX436 Pioneer Evo, I think they usually retail around a ton but I got this for £55 on sale. Comfortable, comes with a chin skirt to keep your chin hairs warm, visor is pinned for a max vision pinlock (pinlock not included), easy to use and operate. It's loud though, not so much issue on a slow bike but at real speed I think the wind noise in this lid would be really bad. It's more practical off road than than my other road biased helmets, anyone after a cheap but decently specced ADV/Dual sport lid could do alot worse.

It mostly has here, suddenly stopped on Saturday morning though and then on Sunday this happened. No more snow overnight though so what's there has now compacted and it's an ice rink outside.

There much of a Byway network around Essex?

Certainly not close to me, no. I'm just off the Thames in with all the industry - in fact I've just looked and there's not a single byway in the whole of Thurrock Shocked

There's a few further out into the wiles of Essex but I'm not sure you'd call it much of a network.

Shame, the bits of the Essex countryside I've seen are very pretty. I think I may be in one of the best parts of the UK for Byways, if you look at the Plain on an OS map there's alot here but you can effectively triple that amount with all the military tracks and unmarked stuff (that you shouldn't be on but largely nobody cares).

If that's an actual Byway for all traffic (without some crappy closure order) it's worth sending a whiney letter to your council about it being blocked, we lost a load round here a while back that same way. Council dumped blocks, nobody whined, council had them closed to motor vehicles then due to lack of use. One near me the blocks are covered in little (mostly orange) marks from people squeezing bikes through Laughing

And to a certain extent I can understand why that byway would have been blocked, given the fly tipping at the other end of it is probably due to pi.......I mean...... people with special protected characteristics.

Out walking a while back and picked a footpath route through about 5 miles away. Got there to find....
