It's a product of it's time. Criticising using contemporary standards is an exercise in futility. And how far do you go with this? Let's not talk about the Romans as they had slaves?!

A valid response is to make a modern re-interpretation, they do it with Shakespeare all the time. For example one of my favourites is Coriolanus (2011) which cuts the aforementioned Romans out completely Wink

An update of Grease would obviously be wildly successful* just like the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters was Rolling Eyes

*With virtue signalling critics, not financially you silly!

It's all so very confusing so I stay out of all this and watch safe family shows like the black and white minstrel show on Youtube

Slight aside... I keep getting ads on Youtube for Discovery+ streaming platform featuring... Jimmy Saville. I f*cking can't stand the ads because I don't want to see that guy's voice or hideous visage popping up on my screen. Discovery are using a 'documentary' about him to sell their platform. Pretty bad taste IMO.

Either way, that's not my point. My point is it's not a kids movie in the way that certain posters have described. Also the version that many of us have seen previously is a cut version with a whole verse of Greased Lightning cut out.

Spike Milligan did a good one where he blacked up, put on an Indian accent and opened a curry house to teach them for coming over here and stealing our jobs.

Of course, he was actually born in India and brought up in Rangoon so he's goty a lot of the mannerisms off-pat.

Ah, dear, dear Bernard.. I was first exposed to some of his bawdy humour in a bar in Magaluf in the early 80s where they played him on an endless loop it seemed. I subsequently picked-up a great many of his gags, only a small portion of which would now be considered racist, which have held me in good stead over the years. Managed to see him live a couple of times in Blackpool too.
