Hi, my bike is parked on the road and today was knocked over by a neighbors car reversing, it went left to right so away from the side stand, landing on and nicely denting my partners car. When I came home, (after about 3 hours) I righted the bike and left it. I've visually inspected it and it looks ok, and started the engine which smoked for about a minute and then ran fine. Is there anything else I need to check or be aware?

Whether your neighbour's teeth are still in their jawbone?

Should be alright if you've checked fluid levels.

A stroke of luck that your partner's car broke its fall...

Have a good look at the levers and footpeg hangers for bending or cracks.

Take a second look tomorrow, and take it for a short ride to ensure everything works as it should.

If there is anything wrong I'd bill the neighbor because -- and I might be pushing the boat out here -- you could say that getting them to pay cash in hand is cheaper than two people attempting to file a claim against them.

In terms of what to look for:

Arrow that the steering goes from left to right lock without issue
Arrow that the front forks compress and rebound as they should
Arrow that the front wheel is straight
Arrow that the handlebars are straight and aren't marginally bent
Arrow no damage to casings that may cause leaks
Arrow fuel tank dents

Only reason I say all that is because the steering lock would have been on at the time and the bars close to the tank; and also the front wheel all the way to the left (the side they've hit it from). Depends what part of the car connected to what part of the bike at what speed, and then of course it depends on what part of the bike was embedded into the partners car for damage on the other side.

I'd guess that the fact your partners car saved it prevented anything ride stopping, but a few safety checks followed by a short ride while you've got the time and before you need it wont hurt (and take a phone with credit, charge and recovery number just in case).

If it rides in a straight line, doesn't make any funny noises, doesn't leak fluid of any sort, stops and goes and handles as it should then I'd say you'll be fine.

I once managed to get a garage to eyeball a friends bike that had been slightly damaged for free, so perhaps use your friendly local for a quick check over if unsure of anything.

Battery, gel cell?

Are rear shocks "linked" by a pipe, same for front.

Engine oil and airbox, you said it started and smoked for a bit...

If it's a 2t, gearbox oil, air in 2t lube system...

Brakes hydraulic( you don't say what bike ) ?

Both brake lever/pedal hard or spongy ?

Before you got for a ride on it....
You should inform your neighbour.
You might have done that damage when you were out test-riding it.
Then the argument ensues..
