PostPosted: 22:47 - 08 Feb 2021    Post subject: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Reply with quote

After a couple of months of being woken up in the early hours by severe pain in my right hand and lesser pain in my left, I was diagnosed with the above in a telephone call with one of the doctors at the practice I try to avoid.

I have already taken the first part of her advice and bought a couple of things which fit over my hands and down my forearms, and which have a piece of steel in them which stops my wrists bending in the night. Apparently this is what causes the pain and they are working.

What I would like to know is what happens next. Do these things I have, which make me feel like an extra in Gladiator, stop working at some point in time or will they work forever? If they stop, what can I do then?

Sorry about being vague but I couldn't think of the questions to ask when I was on the phone and it's impossible to get a follow up call at the moment.

If there are any fellow sufferers you have my sincere sympathy, but any information would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Read this

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/

Not had it myself, but without trying to be glass half empty, everyone I know that has eventually needed surgery, with varying degrees of success.

Funnily enough, i started experiencing what i suspect was carpal tunnel syndrome (kept getting the feeling in my thumb like someone was electrocuting it)

This first started in early December last year, and i quickly bought a wrist splint, and had been using it every night for about 6-7 weeks and the symptoms have now reduced massively, to the point where i only wear it over other night or so

Ok, mine was only mild when it started, but it does appear it can improve/heal given time, i have no idea if it will ever fully recover, or if it will come back, but i can reposrt in my case it has improved massively

carpel tunnel surgery is short but bloody painful. I had my right hand done 2 years ago after I could no longer ride for long without them going numb. I felt a massive difference almost straight away but then 4 days after surgery stripped my bike forks and its come back. prevention is better than cure and if you dont absolutely rest it after surgery you just bugger yourself up again.
I do not want my left hand done as the pain of the tornaquet around my upper arm was excrutiating and im a coward.
Also as Im right handed I found it a nightmare trying to wipe my arse with my left hand and nearly face planted into the sink.

Thats my input, will likely pop back in a year or so Very Happy

Rather surprisingly, we can talk about Adam the Aarons who still isn't a grown man.
And we're not allowed to talk about his imaginary [scam redacted]®.
I'd say he's making trucks from tape these days.
Not a day goes by without innocent motorcyclists dying due to rain related crashes.
Perhaps Adam doesn't care about saving your life?
And he's spent all the crowdfunded money so there's even less chance of finishing the unmentionable product.
Lately he has given us some updates on his website!!

Is he going to admit he's taken your money and spent it on cheap Thai ladyboys?
Some say he's going to become a ladyboy himself.

All I know is that he's a bit of a Dirty Bertie.

So does that answer your question?
Come on, where d'ya wanna meet?
Ah right, you don't want to sort it out man to man.
Meh.

My OH had hers done a few years ago and said it was quite painful. I'd have thought with the surgeon working close to the nerve they wouldn't want the patient jumping or moving because of the pain. Either more effective local anaesthetic or a general would surely be a better idea?

While she was there, she met another patient (a young fisherman) who was getting both hands done at the same time. We did think that his wife must be really understanding and patient... Laughing

I had some symptoms a few years before that and found the hand splint to be very effective. It's certainly worth trying.

Oh and hello scorps Smile

There's a new wrist splint coming to the market (probably in development as I write) it alleviates pressure on nerves inside the carpal tunnel caused mainly by frequent Ham-Shanking.

It's called Car-Pal ®

They thought that I had Carpal issues, but it turned out to be my neck. Had physio on my neck and it all went away. I then thought that I had it again, but found it was to do with my gloves.

I say fix your hand while it's still just a discomfort. Permanent nerve damage is nothing one would want in his/her life.

Do you use a PC mouse often? Get one of those with vertical grip, so you do not cross the bones and tendons in your forearm while using it.

Definitely use one of these. We've had so many people suffer with similar pains that we issue these as standard now.

Don't get the Evoluent ones though - they cost a fortune.
The Anker ones are just as good: Clicky

Yes, it's just a picture to illustrate the idea behind the thought. There are tons of cheaper options.

Also, using a gamepad for gaming is much better for you than using keyboard + mouse. When you use a gamepad, your hands stay in the natural position, just like when using a vertical grip mouse.

I have noticed this years ago, when I bought a Xbox 360 controller for my PC. It just makes perfect sense, considering the ergonomics while holding a (modern) gamepad.

Thanks all for your input. I do find the splints I'm using to be very effective to the extent that, at the moment, I have no pain.

I've already ordered a vertical mouse. I ran a computer consultancy for 30 years, specialising in network installation and support. I guess I spent an average of 4 hours a day over that period using a mouse and never considered it would have any detrimental effect. Now I know lol.

Just to add to this ( I know I'm late to the party ). My OH had it done 4 weeks ago. Was painful for a bout a week then eased really quickly. I made sure she was careful not to overdo it because she is one of those women that can't just do nothing. Anyway it has been very successful, zero pain, strength returning and all around 100% better.
