My phone is getting old an erratic and running out of app memory..
I'm looking for something without a pocket-busting 6" plus display. 5" is plenty for me (current is 4.5")

I guess other specs would be Full Android 8.0 or later (not GO) 4G connectivity 32G Flash 2or more RAM.
Not too fussed about camera cos anything will be better than the current one I have.

I suspect my spec is low, entry level but getting a compact screen is the issue..

Ta all

PS as has been previously mentioned Amazon search filter is shite. GSM arena gives phones form around the world not all available in UK so BCF insight it is. Wink

My wife hit the same problem when her upgrade came round: every phone is super huge and she likes to stash the mobe in her bra Shocked Umm, I don't think you'd have that issue Laughing

Anyhoo, she's sticking with her Samsung S8 and I've thrown in a 30-day rolling contract SIM. Maybe you could find one of those second hand?

What do you have at the mo?
and what do you want it to do?
Perhaps you just need to declutter it with say droid optimiser
or any of a 1001 similar apps that free up memory.

Does it have to be Android? Sounds like the iPhone SE (2020 model) would be a good match.

WhatsApp, Ebay, Email, photos of the kids, even the odd call Wink

Current is cheap £80 chinese phone which in fairness has done great for 3 years, 4G etc,, but a bit slow responding now and touch screen has needed the piezo treatment and memory is running out. Trying to get prepared for the day it gives in.Yes Android only.

Not a powah user meself, my usage is similar to yours
with an added VLC player, BBC sounds, offline google maps etc
I've had good service from Redmi fones which is as well as I can't afford a flagship phone
and don't really need one anyway.

My 5.5" Note 2 2GB/32GB from 2016 is still working great
I only upgraded to the Note4 5.5" as the Note2 couldn't get 4G on
the Tesco/O2 LTE band 20 ( 800)mhz which I was on contract with then.

The Note 4 has 3GB ram and 64GB onboard storage and I now have the
Note 8T 6.2" with 4GB/64GB( 128GB max), both of which work on all the UK LTE/4G bands.

All are dual sim, HD graphics and do what I need with minimum fuss and a lot less
fussy bollox and shit/bloatware than my Samsungs which are riddled with the stuff.

All a wee bit larger than your small screen preference of course but I got big hands
and pockets

I've had a Redmi MI A2 Lite for a while now and it's great and has a small screen. Not sure if there is any newer equivalent that is under 6" though.
Just bought my girlfriend a Redmi note 9 for valentines (after I stood on her last phone Laughing). Seems like a good phone for £140, but it's bigger than you want.

PS Not sure I'll be carrying one in my bra anytime soon though.

Google says Redmi is a sub-brand of Xiaomi so it's not a completely unknown brand. Thumbs Up

I just got a Huawei P40 Lite E, £129 new. Damn good phone, no Google Play services, Huawei's own store and apps. Most apps work, for example the AA breakdown app, Waze, Shazam and thousands more you may have used. Good camera, 4G 64GB, dual sim and takes a microSD card. Very happy with it.

I would be inclined to whizz over to the wonderfully-named "banggood", and have a poke around adjusting various filters.

This, or too big?

Edit: I had a "doodgyphone" for my -2 phone. It was fine.

How big is your 5" phone? Dimensions?

Reason I ask is that 6" screen on a newer phone might still be doable as things have slimmed down in some cases.

eg
Moto G 8 £120
161.27×75.8×8.95 mm
https://www.motorola.co.uk/smartphones-moto-g-gen-8/p?skuId=166

Moto G 9 Play £160
165.21 x 75.73 x 9.18 mm
https://www.motorola.co.uk/smartphones-moto-g-play-gen-9/p?skuId=373

G9 has bigger screen, 25% more battery. Only 4mm taller.
But is £40 more.

I tend to buy Chinese brands (UMI Digi, Doogee, Cubot). But Android updates are non-existent after 6 months and recently I've had to bugger about with flashing a UMI Digi phone to get bugs fixed.

Moto G. My dad and two mates have them (7 & 8) and they work as they should and get regular security updates and are not massively expensive.

EDIT:

Doogee N20 Pro £127
Looks decent enough. Better resolution screen. More memory. MicroUSB instead of USB-C. Smaller battery (but still decent).
Save £30 over G9 Play. But you wont get firmware updates after a year from release.
159 mm x 77.1 mm x 8.8 mm

You're probably right - I think my usage is a throw back to my contracts with 'Cell-net'.. a few years back

Tut Tut

Disregarding the thousands of members who aren't, that is.

And ever so slightly ironic that you ape the average American
who unwittingly lumps together all things British as England. Hand
