Ah, but maybe if they hadn't been into all that tai chi malarkey they wouldn't have needed hip replacements in the first place... that's my theory anyway.

Maybe so, but in terms of my urban theft prevention scheme, its been helpful, even if only as a placebo to make me feel calmer.

'Box dormer' loft conversions - should be banned on the grounds of poor taste and aesthetics - I detest them.

One of my mates has white hair and a white beard plus many tattoos, some dating back to the 60s. I found a garden gnome wearing shorts and having a drink on a sunbed at Asda one year so I painted all the tattoos on and gave it to him for Christmas. He thought I had gone a bit odd showing interest and checking out his various faded markings over the preceding weeks.

My Grandmother no longer has any idea who I am. I suspect her not being able to see me in person for the last year has been a part of it.

She can remember something that happened 70 years ago but me and my youngest brother appear to have been erased.

Dementia sucks.

Crying or Very sad
Its acutely distressing to see dementia, it must be equally as distressing to know that's what is happening to you (when you are lucid enough to know).

The last time we saw my father in law, I clearly recall sitting with my daughter - anguished that he did not know who she was, whilst he was confused/embarrassed/distressed for the same reason.

Although there can be entertaining times.

Whenever I was home in NZ, I always took over the Sunday grandmother-visiting duties to give my mum a break. We had always got on, because I had been left with her as a baby and we bonded really well.

But she had no idea who I was the last couple of times, and she would say to the ladies in the rest home, "Who is this woman? Why has she come to see me?" and they would gently say "This is Jennifer, she is Janet's girl." So she'd accept it, sometimes she'd keep asking "Who are you?", and eventually I'd take her out to go and sit on the wharf in the car, and watch the boats for an hour or two, with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

I'd been making inane conversation whilst driving us there, just to fill the gaps. She was perfectly docile and accepting of being taken somewhere by someone she knew that she trusted. It was what she had always done: be driven somewhere to enjoy some scenery. Oh the rest areas she's got her Thermos out in, when I was a nipper Laughing

One time on the way to the wharf, we went past the street where I lived as a kid, she suddenly piped up "Well I never did like that [name of my stepfather]. I always liked Patrick Green much better."

I was just like Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

She never said anything much else after that, back to random tidbits about which boats were passing, and questions about who I was.

But that lightning flash of lucidity, which brought back everything, including knowing exactly who I was, where we were, as well as the fact that we were alone together, shared a secret hatred of the man, and that we liked to smirk together about it, really helped me cope with the times when she was somewhat more ga-ga.
