If I use the same components, motherboard, cpu, ram, drives and fans, will a 650w PSU use more power than a 450w one?

The system can run on a 450w PSU, but the 650w has the correct connectors and would save buying power splitters.

Assume both are 80+ Gold standard.

Thanks.

The PC does not consume more power just because you use a higher wattage power supply. The PSU will run cooler, because the higher wattage PSU won't get that stressed.

The wattage is the maximum power the PSU can provide, minus the power wasted in heat. 80% efficiency means 80% of the electricity that goes in powers your PC and 20% is wasted in heat.

AFAIK only the silver/gold/gold+/etc. rating relates to the efficiency of the PSU and therefore any power wasted. Going overspec on a PSU is generally a good thing.

I figured it would only draw what it needs but didn’t want to over spec and cost more to run.

It’s going to be on 24/7 so power consumption matters.

Once this is sorted at least I can move on to finding a low TDP motherboard with embedded cpu.

You gotta weigh up what you have.

2x hdds?

2x fdds? (one being 5.25?)

maybe 1 cd drive and 1 dvd writer?

That overclocked 486dx2 is a hungry thing.

a beefy Trident graphics card? a NIC and an SB?
Perhaps you've also got some scsi extras going on.

It all adds up Thumbs Up

It's not a heavy weight system.

8x 3.5 HDD
2x SATA
1x SAS card
3x case fans
CPU and Motherboard (it's an i5 but can't remember the spec off the top of my head), everything is on-board, LAN, Graphics, etc

Calculators says I need a 450w, but the style of the 650w version is preferable for me.

My PC use 644W, an 850W is what I use.

Peak performance for PSUs is around 75-80% of its total output.

8 x 3.5 HDD is so out of date, do you really need mechanical disks?

Sounds like its just a storage/hosting type box so would be happy with a 650w running 450w worth of stuff.

It is a storage box.

Whats the alternative to mechanical hard drives for large capacity?

I could get larger drives and use less but as I already have a stack of 4tb and 2tb at this time it seems like money i don't need to spend. (I tend to go larger if/when they fail)

I just don't like mechanical drives Laughing

For storage, yeah I get you, its probably fine, I've got about 16tb of SSD and I reckon its going to last nicely. Ideally I need a board upgrade though.

Well recording and streaming gameplay is 10-12GB per hour, gets binned after a month but is a HUGE amount.

Movies are what, 4-6GB a pop, about a thousand of those with TV shows etc.

I've got one of those cold storage 8TB Seagate drives for all my shite. My movie downloads collection goes back further than Napster!

A bit like a bike - the power supply is similar. If you need the power a larger power supply can supply the power , but if the motherboard and peripherals aren't calling for the power then the PSU wont deliver it.
Analogy If you are cruising along at 50 either a 125 or a 600 will be fine - if you need more power twist the throttle - above a certain speed the 125 will run out of steam the 600 will still be capable of delivering. Sort of .

Why don't you build a low power storage box such as an N54l?

I have a 2TB NVMe SSD on my machine and it's fantastic for system and game storage. Fast as fuck.

Here is the specs when I benchmarked it after building it:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12659435

It has since been upgraded with the 2TB drive, but it's the same Samsung EVO unit so performance will be extremely similar.

This is replacing my n40l, I’ve out grown what I feel I can do with the 4 bays. It’s been a great machine, be a shame when it goes.

Use an online calculator, which is what did when building my PC.. a least you'll know if you were thrashing it. IIRC, PSU's running at low output are less efficient than PSU's running their optimum, design load, I could be wrong I've been wrong before.

Here's one...
disclaimer: other online calcs are available and no PC's were hurt during the calculations, I take no responsibility whatsoever, for anything whatsoever.

https://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ Whistle

EDIT: Just done mine .... 789 Watts Shifty

Apparently ... optimum efficiency is acchieved when running at half load. Thats handy I have a 1300W, so give or take 790 is not excessively over the halfway mark.

1/2 to 3/4 loads are the optimum operating ranges for a PSU, the higher you get the more constraints but yeah as you've read really, about 1/2 is key. I'm using 519W out of 850W so about right. Thumbs Up

I check use my TP-Link smart plug and it says I'm currently pulling 25-30w, on a 650w PSU, I think I may have over specced it hahahaha.

Still need get the SAS card, 8x 3.5 HDDs in and the fans wired up (need a molex to sata cable)

That's from the mains, it'll be from the PSU, you can check what the PSU is pulling with some magic.
