What's that thing made of? Looks like some kind of composite fibre material. I should think that a failure like that is worthy of a safety recall; someone should notify Aprilia UK.

That's not a composite, it looks very much like hugely corroded Alu. No idea what grade or alloy it is, other than shit. I am presuming it's bolted to something steel, and has had an insane galvanic reaction.

The top one reminds me of the "tin pest" effect (tin has two metallic forms, the less common one is brittle and crumbly and the first form can turn into it, it looks like its rotting away). However that doesn't happen with aluminium.

Relatively well known issue from what I understand. A lot of people stuck it down to being pressure washed / wrong cleaning chemicals but, hey, who knows eh.

I only know this as my friend has an RSV Mille which is absolutely immaculate and he noticed a similar deterioration and went investigating.
