Don't know if it's just me but I love a noisy gearbox and engine! Really satisfying to hear a wizz sound when on the throttle.

Depends on the engine. V4 gear driven cams? Hell yes.

I thought it was a characteristic of straight cut gears? Which I think most bikes use.

As long as the noise is ‘normal’ and part of the inherent character of the bike, I can live with it.

If the bike develops a whine Shocked Shocked , not happy Pepperami is not happy.

I suppose going on from this, all the different noises my/your bike makes, tells you about the bike and its health.
A bit like when your car develops a squeak, you know something needs to be fixed.

Yeah most of the moving sound will come from this, yet there can be plenty more depending on the design of the chain and valve control aswell sometimes.

Why no option for 'what whine? I can't hear anything over the radio.'

If you like all the noises a bike makes, get yourself a Street Triple with a decent can. It's the Mozart of bike noise. You don't ride it, you conduct it Laughing

I was about to say something very similar

If you like a nice induction whine, ride a Striple, it's bloody addictive

Totally agree with you both. My STR with Leo Vince exhaust was pure music from the induction noise to the exhaust noise. I never had a another bike in the same league as that one for sound.

V4 gear driven cam whine. If you've not ridden one with a decent boomy can on it, your ears are missing out. The sound is a large part of why I bought the bike.

The cam gears are straight cut, and also much closer to you, hence it's so noticable.

Nope, don’t like it. Sounds electric. ZX6R G2 induction roar for the win. (Remus can too.) When I got the R1 it had a whine and a buzz which disappointed me, although I don’t notice it anymore. Sound is not the R1’s thing in comparison to the Kawasaki.

Sorry, I just like a thumpy exhaust. If I can hear the engine I think there's something wrong.

Crossplane crank and a decent end can comes pretty close to this too.

This.

Love the induction roar of my MT-09, it got even better once I chucked an Akrapovic on it.

The TL1000R makes a beautiful sound, a really satisfying whine at idle and an amazing sound from the pipes with the right exhaust system.

The six cylinder CBX 1000 makes a sound similar to an F1 car, it sounds insane.

And the Crossplane R1 sounds monstrous.

Just a few of my favourites.

One of my favourites was my 750 Turbo once I had got rid of the silencers, just a short bit of open pipe as trim. Sounded pretty mean, but not ridiculously loud, but the turbo whistle was really clear.

My H2 (triple) sounded good with Denco expansion chambers. Two stroke crackle but with a deeper note than most 2Ts due to the capacity. That was feckin' loud to the point where a neighbour told me she'd reported me to the local police (that was my dad - never heard a peep from him about it Laughing ).

Both Japanese bikes I've owned have had a slight whine from the gearbox (disappears when I pull the clutch). It used to bug me no end (and still does sometimes) as to me it sounds wrong, but I put it down to being straight cut gears. My Triumph oddly didn't whine at all though (and the gearbox if anything was slightly more agricultural feeling than the Japanese bikes).

I've been enjoying the V4 VFR800fi gear driven cam whine, it has a Remus can which is a fairly generic carbon end can, but it sounds pretty decent.

The Striple whistle, along with the air induction on the throttle and the SC Project Moto 2 link pipe I fitted sounded utterly epic. I do miss how that bike sounded, jizz worthy in short.

Ah yes, but my VFR is a newer one without the gear driven cams . . . or else I'd be enjoying the noise!

yep

my kawasaki is unfortunately not like this however - all stock, exhaust-wise....and pretty quiet too...but wow, the engine sounds busy; ticking, buzzing, whirring. It's all normal - i suppose the various noises just reflect how overly complicated it is (as many of the il4 bikes from that era were).

One thing you don't want: if your chain is overtightened you might hear a whine. It will be putting unwanted strain on the output shaft bearing. People who come to the FZS1000 Fazer for the first time often over-tighten the chain, as the recommended adjustment seems to be too slack compared to other bikes.
