Now ms.Evergreen is free, the blame game starts.

Many of us have had problems getting insurance companies to pay up for our own little contretemps and , arry excepted Wink , we probably don't have the highest regard for them.

Spare a thought for the owners of above named box boat, they are going to see some of the best buck dodging since someone said she's unsinkable about a certain liner. Laughing

I'll have you know I'm just as much of a bastard as the rest of them Laughing

Weirdly, I never used to worry about container ships and such like but these days I'm handling multi territory, multi class business and....... yeah it's fair to say this one is causing some consternation.

It will be a horribly, horrifically complex job to adjust this one.

It almost seems like an insurance fraud, though. Just like the ''unsinkable one'' probably was. Thinking

So where's the blame on this one, the captain of the boat? Didn't think he'd be in charge, it'd be the equivalent of the harbour master for piloting through the canal? Thinking

Then there's the dredgers, maybe a bit slack this season?

The only place in the whole wide world where the Master of a ship hands over total responsibility and command of his ship is the Panama canal.

In the Suez you are under pilotage of the Suez pilots but still retain total overall command so even if the pilots stuff her into the bank (familiar anyone?) the Master still has overall responsibility and is top of the blame tree.

Was it his decision, or the company's, not to employ tugs for the passage? Seems like a major oversight given the weather conditions in the Suez at this time of year. I should imagine the local port authority is already busy rewriting it's requirements for tug usage, although it's going to take more than a couple of tugs to stop something the size of the Evergreen when she's got windage issues.

The real issue is in letting something that size make passage up a 30+ mile long, tidal, sand ditch.

I blame the Indian crew because it was their fault.

It's up to the Suez canal authority. Usually there is a tugboat at the front and rear of each convoy. Sometimes they will insist on a tug escorting certain ships, LNG carriers and the like. All the ships load boats onto their decks with crew, the idea being if the ships have to stop they lower the boats which take ropes ashore to hold the ships in the centre of the canal.

All rules set in place by the Suez canal authority, The owners have no say in it.

The insurance underwriters are going to have to take another ship on their books now.
