Ukraine has essentially just declared war on Russia.
Russian stronk is now rolling West. The Southern District Military Command has moved to the Ukraine border. That's 2 mobile brigades with artillery support.
They have also deployed the 56th Airborne Brigade with a supporting Armour Corps into the Crimea Region.
NATO and the US have issued a status revision late last night :
'U.S. European Command raises its watch level from "possible crisis" to "potential imminent crisis" (highest level).

I wonder if Putin's strategy revolves around isolating Europe from energy sources. Bearing in mind Iraq, Libya and to a certain extent Afghanistan (being as it is a gateway to the resources of the other 'stans) were all about oil.

I could get by with Crimea being a PR stunt but annexing the rest of the country just to get a land route to his seaside villa seems a bit extreme

Pretty sure that Ukraine defending ukrainian territory doesn't count as 'terrorist'.

Also pretty sure that Ukraine isn't part of nato so no real.involvement from the eu or the US. It was about Russia gaining a warm water port which they now have.

There will be stern words but nothing more unless Russia starts making moves outside of Ukraine.

IIRC Putin's little tickle was no official involvement of Russian forces in the Ukraine. Anybody with a Russian accent caught holding an AK47 was just there on holiday!

Surely the answer, if the US & EU were really that bothered, would be to send in some more private mercenaries to prop up the nationalists

The Ukrainian government hasn't ripped the agreement up they've just taken issue with the venue for future talks.
