Having to lubricate a chain 'properly' is a task.
It has to be lubed every fill up of the fuel tank. 150-200 miles.

Shocked

Auto oilers remove this regular hassle.

From reading the above 22 posts, I gather that auto oilers remove this regular hassle, and replace it with their own set of regular hassles.

1. requiring oil specific to the auto oiler brand.
2. filling a reservoir that may be difficult to access and/or an annoyance to fill.
3. adjusting the proper drip rate.
4. adjusting for changes in viscosity due to ambient temperature.
5. adjusting the drip tube so the oil hits the chain.

To each his own, right mate? For me, lifting my bike onto the center stand for two squirts of gear oil on my chain once every fill up is a labour of love.

They don't require specific oil and the rest is insignificant compared the pain in the arse that oiling the chain requires whilst massively extending their life.

I have no complaints about O-ring chain life yet I don’t clean them and I apply gear oil infrequently albeit thoroughly with a paintbrush, removing the excess with a rag. I suspect auto-oilers appeal to the comparatively obsessive cleaners-and-lubers who then proclaim it’s the device wot did it. I just can’t see how a random drop of oil now and again can do the trick.

It’s a bit like fans of winter protectorants like ACF-50 who, it turns out, wash the bike once a fortnight and reapply.

I've used vacuum controlled Scottoilers on a couple of my bikes and they're superb. I also have one of these on my M900 and can thoroughly recommend them too:

1. Nope - any gear oil will do. Never used the actual ScottOiler stuff
2. Depends when you put it - mine's just under the seat.
3. You set it maybe twice a year when the weather really changes. Or if you're fair-weather, you're likely to never need to.
4. See point 3.
5. Only ever done this once when installing it.
