Been monitoring mine over the weekend to see whats what. I am using around 390W when at full chat gaming @60C. On idle its around 180W, the majority I guess is CPU and cooling stuff keeping it around 25C thats eating the power.

Its a pretty efficient machine, but has later generation hardware than yours.

Yeah, I guess gaming is one of the most power intensive activities you can put a PC through, as the demands on the graphics card are so high.

Not as bad as you'd think and modern stuff is much more efficient.

Yeah, I would love to upgrade to state of the art kit - but the old HP XW8400 is more than capable of doing the tasks I require, second hand value is negligible (especially compared to what it cost originally) - so I'm finding it hard to justify replacing it. I'm gonna try and get another decade out of it lol. Mr. Green

Wouldn’t use a hoover. It can cause static buildup on the nozzle and fry a board if they come into contact.

Yeah, I bought a small electric blower with a nozzle for blowing dust out of the inside of the pc case after watching a guy on youtube recommending it for the reason you describe (with the blower you can keep the nozzle a decent distance from the pc components to remove the dust - which you can't do with the vacuum cleaner) it's got some decent blowing power on it's highest setting and should also come in handy for blowing crap off valve covers and out of spark plug holes prior to removal.

Would be nice to get a compressor at some point.

All true but
the admittedly amazing 64 core AMD Ryzen threadripper is what? 5 grand?
and the Xeon 5140 you'd pick up for a fiver or less
'there's many a good tune played on an old fiddle' as they say
or, more bcf related..
you dont need a Hyabusa to deliver pizzas

I believe the Xeon 5140 uses an LGA771 socket
so a better affordable cpu might be available
some research would need to be done though.

I recall using a site where you can input the mobo
details and it will give cpu upgrade options.
I used it to find and buy a cheap ASUS mobo to run the Core2quad cpu
and memory from a crappy Foxconn mobo with a fooked BIOS chip
It only has to run win7/32 and cnc machine related stuff and works a treat, all for £25 or so.

EDIT:
found it

Interesting figures and info Im-a-Ridah and WD Forte, thanks! It definitely gives me an idea of just how jurassic my dinosaur desktop is Very Happy - yeah - the HP XW8400 is conclusively outclassed by the contemporary hardware, but (as WD Forte implies) I think this PC will be well up to handling windows 10 and basic business software (internet linked graphical charting software which updates in real time etc) well into the future.

It was originally designed for a professional video editing suite - and could handle documentary length programmes containing thousands of cuts, renders, motion, audio effects etc which required significantly more processing and graphics resources than the stuff I'm going to be using it for, I reckon it should be more than adequate for a few years.
