Hey guys, Phil here from Merseyside.

Used to rider crossers back in my teens and had a car licence for 22 years now. Always had a hankering for a sports bike and decided finally to bite the bullet. Did my theory test today and passed with flying colours, so next step needed to get on a bike.

Seems a bit of a minefield. Some instructors seem to require CBT first, others seem to offer it as part of the DAS package. Should I just book a CBT and go from there?

Either works.

Booking it as part of a DAS package will probably be cheaper.

Doing your CBT separately leaves you with the option of going to a different training school for lessons if it turns out that for whatever reason weren't impressed with the instructor when doing your CBT.

If you do the CBT separately then you'll almost without a doubt be using a 125cc. If you do the CBT as part of a DAS package then you could be on a bigger bike for some of it. That's not to say that whichever training school puts DAS people on bigger bikes when doing the CBT.

You pays your money and you takes your choice. Razz

Personally I'd do my CBT first and as other guy said make sure
You like the school you've chosen . I went to a different school for my das as didn't feel the school I did my CBT with were that good, they were just close and cheap. Do a bit of research look at Google reviews for schools. I ended up at a school that is 35-40 minutes drive away but it's well worth it.Once you've decided crack straight on with you're DAS .

I'd also consider paying for lessons as you go, if after your CBT you have a lesson to assess your ability , your instructor may say you need less lessons than you would spend on a course.

Because of covid and a large backlog a lot of places are fully booked for months for DAS so you had better give them a call .. It may be the same for CBT.

Exactly as others have said, the backlogs for CBT's, DAS and the actual practical tests themselves at the DVSA level are pretty severe.

Also be aware of the costs of DAS, so far in terms of training fees I have paid to BikeRite Training (Rutherglen):

Compulsory Basic Training (1-day course): £150.00,
Direct Access Scheme (4-day course): £750.00,
MOD 1 Re-test and morning practice (0.5-day course): £125.00.

Currently in the hole for £1,025.00 and still don't have a MOD 1, so it's likely when I throw in a couple additional practices before MOD 2 that I am going to be over £1,500.00 in training and licensing costs.

Wow!

I thought it was bad paying £1,500 for my 7 day DAS. It’s starting to sound like good value for money!

Ed, one of the instructors at BikeRite said "People are happy to pay £1,500 for a helmet but not £1,500 on what goes inside it". Have to agree with him, I see proper tuition as an investment so I don't begrudge the cost of training in reality. I think the guys who trained me so far on my DAS (Ed and Fraser) are really good.

Well, had a chat with our local place BikeSmart in Wigan. Went over earlier this week and did my CBT.

I really enjoyed the day and the instructor was great. Took me a few mins to get used to being back on a bike. The slow manoeuvres were my weakpoint. Slipping the clutch and holding the back brake on is completely alien to car driving, but I got my head around it.

Out on the roads, I certainly enjoyed myself. Felt more comfortable at the upper speeds. He said I need to remind myself to knock off the indicators, and leave a little more gap, but apart from that, ready to move on.

I'm going to book in some Mod1 training I think.

Shame you wasnt closer, I could have gotten you through it at half the price you are going to end up paying.

I checked the prices of other schools in the area and it seems BikeRite are on the high end but I just want my A license as soon as possible and BikeRite were by far the quickest to get me onto the first MOD 1.

It would be interesting to contrast it with other European countries and the USA plus ANZAC.

New Zealand is easy .. Do a CBT and theory then you can ride a bike up to 660cc, and power of less than 150 kilowatts per tonne on L plates.

You then take a "restricted" test and can dump your L plates .. Then take your full test (almost same as restricted) then you can ride what you like. .. Training is optional.

That's crazy money. I've decided to grow up and learn how to ride a bike about couple of months ago.
Found a good school and did my CBT first (£120) as I didn't know if it would work for me or not. However I had so much fun on little gutless 125 that I decided to do DAS which only costed me £600.
Now the best part is that my instructor will spend as much time as I need to be ready for practical tests and my school has weekly access to the test centre facilities where I will be doing Mod 1.

If everything goes according to plan I should have my Mod 1 & Mod 2 tests at the end of August.
