I want to add a charging element to my Fazer 1000 so that I can charge a satnav, phone etc on long distance rides

What's the best kit to buy?

I assume the best route would be to somehow wire into the ignition so that its only on when the ignition is on to avoid battery draining

anybody done this?

Cheers Thumbs Up

I think Stinkwheel did a howto on this in show and tell.

The right way would be to wire direct to battery, but with a relay from a switched live. That way it doesn't draw power from a circuit that might need it, but is only live when the ignition is on so it doesn't flatten your battery.

Yep, thats exactly how I wire in heated grips. I believe the favoured one to find is the one to the rear brake switch as it's only live when the ignition is on, although I normally find one nearer the ignition.

If you're wiring direct may I be so bold as to suggest adding an inline fuse Smile

On my CBR i wired my tomtom rider to the fusebox on the lighting circuit with an inline fuse.
Each time i turned the bike off the tomtom did the 10 second count as it turned off, giving me confidence i was not going to end up with a flat battery.
And i never did.

When i sold the bike i kept the sat nav and was as easy as just unclipping and lifting off.
