I agree with your reasoning but given that a historic motorbike is exempt from both the Congestion and ULEZ I wonder if the first angry political voice might be Genghis Khan I've already met a few people who commute into town on a '70s bike and that proposition becomes more viable when the window moves up to '80s bikes IMHO.
Really though the number of classic bikes - butchered or otherwise - is so tiny I don't think the piss taking even registers but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on whether the car lot fuck up. ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Exactly. 80s bikes are mostly good. They can be maintained for a long time, or brought back from near-death. They're also petrol burners.
This could be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, nobody really cares if a few people commute into London on old bikes, as long as they aren't getting noticed too much. On the other hand, 80s bikes with open pipes, riders raging at pedestrians crossing the road, etc. is not going to be tolerated. London is a major city, and, as in all major cities, control of the streets is a political hot topic, and there's no real room for rampant individualism. Therefore, just a single motorcyclist speeding through a protest could be enough to turn a negative spotlight on things. Similarly, breaching future lockdowns, revving under a tunnel like their favourite Youtube motovloggers, or doing any of the minor things which don't really matter at all when you're out of the capital but which give such a feeling of freedom to a Londoner because they're slightly antisocial or transgressive within that London bubble, will take on a new dimension of importance.
So perhaps it really is a good thing that CX500s and the like are being butchered, hardly to be ridden again. This makes them rarer, and less likely to be seen as serious commuting machines. It's hard to say which way it will go, but it's troubling. People who go out of their way to get their hands on 80s bikes rarely were around in the 80s, they have no appreciation of the aesthetics of that time, they watch a polished Youtube video and believe they can create a postmodern identity of their own by effacing motoring history with an angle grinder. Society is ailing, the people are getting sick and losing their identities and souls. The cafe racers reflect this.
So anyone stubborn enough to hold onto an 80s bike, maintain it and rip it around on a commute is going to be someone with something to prove, which in today's terms means content on an Instagram account. In the course of doing so, they won't care about being socially responsible, and it's quite likely that, simply because the bikes were so good, this will come to the attention of Khan.
I note that someone in Youtube-land with an apparent ear to the Cotswolds set believes that there will be a historic cutoff for late 80s vehicles, i.e. the rolling exemptions will end. Once more, this is because Testarossa and Countach, and nothing to do with Sarah on her old V-Max proving something or the other about her balls, or Bob the inherited-wealth British redneck "country boy" with meaningless tattoos on his CD200 cafe racer. If bikes can fly under the radar and not be noticed, they won't be noticed for quite a while, and that's really good.
Anyway, I've taken this way off-topic.
Here's to bring it back:

I like the way this one has started with the tail end, then stopped before even making a seat. "Hmm, no, bad idea, I'd better get rid!" |

tbh that rear section is very wrong - the tail piece on the 250rs is quite a nice design, and that's nothing like it should be, ditto the seat and presumably seat base ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

Pretty much apart from the ridiculous ape hanger bars. A friend has one and it's an unbelievably ugly thing. Whatever floats yer boat I suppose... |

Well, that's toast. Will never be ridden again, unless you count 15 uncomfortable and noisy miles to the bike meet once a year. I'm sure he's an expert at frame geometry, and matching GXSR forks with unique swingarm and suspension combinations. Or maybe not... |

The seat spells out something but I'm having trouble staring at it long enough to make it out
It looks like a kiddie's swing chair. |
