A C90 I’m interested in buying has a slightly bent frame (or possibly forks) as the mudguard rubs the air box slightly. Apparently in the 29 years or so of ownership it’s never been crashed. What do we think? Avoid? Or tolerate / repair on the basis it can’t be too much of an issue if it’s been like this for decades.

Cheers

I think "apparently" may be the operative word here.

Unless you know for sure what is bent/knackered it's just a potential money pit, with you changing stuff, getting the frame straightened (if it can be). C90s come up pretty regularly (though for classic prices now). I'd just look for a different one myself.

I'd wonder if the engine mounts are everything they should be. If it's rubbing the mudguard on the airbox, they could be rotting out leaving the engine canted forwards.

I'd treat it with suspicion too
and assume it's like this until proved otherwise

Seems to be rust free everywhere I can get to which is making me lean towards it. Plastics look like they’ve been off for a respray so possible the mudguard didn’t go back on properly. But the more I hear myself talking, the more I’m rethinking

If I have to try and make a real decision based on 'apparently' and 'possibly', its not the bike for me.

Next one will come along shortly.

I have considered but they’re a bit soulless compared with the C90.

I am still uhming and ahming. This one wasn’t perfect; carb needed cleaning and a new spring on the rear brake pedal as it was sluggish to return (I could see the spring was incorrect as it wasn’t extended when the pedal was depressed).

The sensible thing is to sit back and wait for another to come along. Trouble is with a kid and 60hr working week things tend to vanish before the weekend when the first chance comes to view something!

You sound like my wife! Laughing

That's kind of the point of something like a C90 - bare minimum of work needed (in theory) and when it is needed, it's simple.

I've since binned off the (possibly) bent frame one and found a rebuilt one that's in impeccable condition throughout. Thumbs Up

Yep. Laughing

To be fair, it's the perfect "escape" and contrast to the viffer, which is part of the attraction. Always wanted a classic vehicle (initially a car before I was into bikes) and this ticks that box without being too costly or space consuming. Thumbs Up
