Speedfight 2 problem.

Hello, so starting off, I have a 2004 Speedfight 2 100cc. It’s been running perfectly fine untill yesterday. I started it fine as always with the electrical starter, as I’ve only ordered my kick starter a few hours before writing this.

So, I went to start my scooter, and it just wouldn’t start. I looked at the voltage of the automotove battery, and it dropped down to 5 when I went to start it.

After turning my lights off, the voltage didn’t drop when trying to start it up. But when I went for a quick ride to my local shop and shut the scooter off, the bendix was spinning without the ignition being turned on.

So I took the battery cover off, and removed the wire connected to the battery. The bendix stopped spinning.

But now, when I put the wire back on the battery, it tries to start the scooter without the ignition turned on.

When the ignition is turned on, it will start up normally but when I remove the wire from the battery and give some gas, it just turns off for some reason. I’ve not looked into the wiring, as I personally don’t want to do the wrong thing instead of fixing it.

A buddy of mine told me that it could be some wires touching together and making this problem, but I’m not too sure.

It sounds like the starter relay switch (activated by the start button) contacts have welded together due to low voltage feed over a period of time.

I agree with Jaffa90; the starter relay would be the first place to look for an abnormality. Your bike is energizing the starter, even when the start button is not depressed. The starter relay is the nexus between the start button and the circuit between your battery and the starter. A failed relay is more likely than wires getting crossed. Trace the big wire from battery + to the first connection down the line. That component should be the starter relay.

It does, however, sound like a starter solenoid problem. They can fail closed as well as open. You'll find it between a heavy cable from the battery positive terminal and the starter motor terminal.

Oh and welded contacts are caused by arcing. Nothing to do with low voltages just high starting currents.
