Yes. I could and I would. My oppinion on mandatory helmet use is well documented.

Anyone who hasn't fitted a 5-point harness in their car in place of the inertia reel seatbelt should have a long think before climbing up on their high horse about that because 5-point harnesses have a better proven safety benefit and are cheaper than a motorcycle helmet. Unless you just don't want one because they are inconvenient, uncomfortable and restrict your peripheral vision...

Anyway, I was making the point that many people want to buy safety rather than learn it. If you had £150 to spend on making yourself safer on your bike. Training would be the number 1 best return on your money. The less experienced the rider, the more benefit you'll get. I'm not saving don't buy an airbag but remember it is at best a marginal gain and only comes into play after you already had a crash.

But you forgot a third option - an airbag vest AND advanced training.
Other than cost, why are the two apparently mutually exclusive?

I'll happily admit to wearing a Helite Turtle vest; have done for several years now. No it's not particularly cool and people sometimes take the piss a bit, but wearing it affects my enjoyment of riding a bike not one iota.

Every time the topic of airbag vests comes up we get this mantra that training, experience, rider abiity etc is far more important. If so, should we all get trained up and wear T-shirts, shorts and flipflops to ride our bikes all summer? The answer from 99% of riders would be 'no', because there's a recognition that what we do carries a quantifiable risk of at some stage sliding down the road on our arses, no matter how good a rider we think we are, so we wear protective gear to mitigate the outcome of that. All that an airbag vest represents is another level beyond the basic helmet/boots/gloves/riding suit combo that most riders wear - I just think it's simply up to individuals where they choose to draw their own personal line as regards the level of gear they use.

(FWIW - I documented here my own experience of my airvest getting deployed a few years ago. tl;dr - judging by my mashed helmet, the paramedics reckoned I'd have ended up with a busted neck without it, rather than a few sore ribs and a broken collarbone.)

So, definitely worth the cost then.

I have an in&motion airbag vest and set it off run-starting my friend's R1. Big old bang, thought the bike started but turns out the bang wasn't his exhaust. Laughing

I've ridden in trainers since 2008, the occasional 'looks like it'll rain, I'll wear boots'

Still have feet. Don't care what people think about what I wear, but I'd be happy to accept abuse if I rode with an airbag jacket. Laughing

Very true. An airbag is like wearing an all body condom in my mind of strangeness. You could just wear the airbag and nothing else. That would be interesting. I so so want to stick my flipflops on and go out for a scoot to enlighten my mind. I'm too scared to do it though.

Edit Flipin dog has farted while I've been typing this, stinks

The last few times I've been out it's been in polo shirt and shorts, though I always wear boots and gloves.

Would I wear a helmet if they were not mandatory? Not always, though they are handy for keeping you head warm.

My life, my risk, my business. The law should come down heavily on people who risk the safety of others but keep it's nose out of things that don't.

The three unicorns of motorcycling.

I am yet to see any guy on a GS that hasn't been wearing at least some fluro stuff. Seen a literal banana guy head-to-toe in fluro gear on his GS on the road between Hamilton and Cambuslang and again on the road between Strathaven and Stonehouse Laughing

I rode my Chinese 125 through the last winter as a commuter and in all honesty I didn't see the fuss that some people make about winter riding. Decent boots and gloves and it was perfectly fine.

Riding in slush and icy roads wasn't that bad. The only thing that's given me some small amount of fear is heavy gale-force winds.
