I got them in advance for a 5 day trip to Wales and the only rider that didn't have one will now get one too. It was far too helpful for all the reasons you mentioned. It doesn't mean you're constantly chatting.

My experience this weekend very much echoes this. I was the guy not on the comms and therefore missed out on the assistance offered in terms of overtakes, warnings etc. I do have a headset - a Cardo Freecom 1+ which I use for sat nav and music; it can link to other headsets by Bluetooth but it's not worth the hassle for the limited range unless to a pillion. It was also a useful hands-free phone headset when I ran into some problems with my bike, however I am now seriously considering the upgrade to a Cardo Packtalk so I can join in with the group chat (as well as maintaining the other features I already use).

I'm not sure how many people can connect on one call though (or how many you'd want to be connected). I've had up to 3 other rides plus me on my Freecom 4+. I don't think I'd want many more than that anyway though to be honest (I very rarely ride in a bigger group and find it's better then to break into "satellite groups" of 3-4 riders anyway and re-convene at stops).

I think the Packtalk can go up to around 15 connections through its mesh network. You can also Bluetooth into the network via a ‘buddy’ connection but you’d need to stay close to your buddy to remain connected.
