I'm looking at an old Electra Glide (1983) that needs wiring restoration. All the old connectors look like Yamaha unsealed connectors except with round pins instead of blades, a bit like the old 4-pin hard drive connectors on PCs Thinking Does anyone know what one would call this style of connector?

As this bike has no loom at all at the moment I'm also considering using the Yamaha type plugs (similar style for the era) or generic sealed plugs (better but odd for an '80s HD.)

Nice, I was trying to remember what they were called Thumbs Up

Of course if you just type Molex into the Googles you only turn up PC connectors but "Molex Motorcycle" does the trick Smile Not 100% it's them but very similar.

Kicking myself I didn't take photos, I just thought "there's loads of Harleys in the world, surely these would be common."

I looked them up out of curiosity and they seem to use a variety of
connectors. Molex, AMP plus others
this page may help for reference

Very helpful, thanks. I'm going to suggest to my guy that we just use some off-the-shelf, easy-to-source connectors instead and looking at this variety I'll not feel so guilty (oh! won't someone think of the purity!) Smile

I think they're mostly AMP, judging from that page.

I've known guys spend lotsa dosh on new looms harnesses
for old bikes when they just needed fixing by a responsible adult.

There are some exceptions though

Mechanical damage:
crush, impact wear, on cables connectors etc

Overheating:
If you strip back some insulation and the copper conductor wire is black ( thas bad)
Then I'd fit new, bright copper cable as soldering is virtually impossible and crimps unreliable when it's that bad

Previous owners 'improvements'
aka bodges

all good fun

I think the original loom is in a bag somewhere but between age, bodges and lots and lots of unnecessary Harley stuff (tape-player/radio!) we thought it best to start fresh Smile

Have a look on this site (I've linked the multipole connector page but they do all of the right tools, sleeving and lots of other very useful stuff)

I'm a fan of those superseal weatherproof connectors, have bought plenty of them on ebay. They resist vibration nicely and don't get as manky inside as some other types.

For a good source of wire, see if anyone near you has dumped a washing machine. They contain a large amount of appropriate wire in lots of different colours.
