PostPosted: 00:16 - 24 Sep 2021    Post subject: shock absorber spring weight? Reply with quote

Hi, does anyone know how i can find out what the spring weight is on my 1985 Yamaha MS50cc Popgal (17J-SE1) mopeds rear shock absorbers should be. is it stamped someplace on the shock absorber itself.

i need to replace the twin rear shocks as the bike is bottoming out over the smallest of bumps in the road and is not just uncomfortable to try to ride but dangerous in my mind to a degree. I've searched for original knew old stock shocks but they just don't seem to available anywhere on the net.

i found some that look similar in shape and size measurements that i can make do with and fit as an alternative to the original but i need the match the spring weight before i try and buy a pair. I don't know what the spring weight should be at the moment and I'm stuck with that until i find out what it should be.

would you help me find out pls. i want to ride this little bike a few more times before i store it away for winter.

Before matching spring weights we needs to know if you
is a right fat bastard or not. Smile
Maybe that's why it's bottoming out

You cant really select a spring without knowing the load can you?
especially as many of us tend to get somewhat plumper over the years.

i was fat after first lock down but i lost it now. no, rear shocks have gradually got worst as i have got lighter. for sure shocks have had there day. they couldn't hold the weight of a stick insect never mind someone of normal body weight. I'm 13 stone, 82 kg.

Great looking 'ped by the way! But as the others have suggested you don't appear to have the physique of the target demographic..

This 50cc model was developed in response to the growth in the number of unmarried women

Aren't they more likely to weigh more than 13 stone if they're unmarried?

13st doesn't sound morbidly obese (unless you're 5'2")
but its probably higher than the expected demographic for that wee bike.
I cant see it clearly but it looks like it has an eye at top and
U shaped scooter type fixing at the bottom
ie one clearance hole, one tapped hole, often M8

I'd measure the dimensions of the existing weak ones and see if could get a pair from say a common/cheap 125 to fit rather then go down a rabbit hole of properties, dimensions, spring rates etc

come on guys its not that bad. I'm quite a stick there's nothing to me. I'm the average sized guy. some Americans are much bigger than me and i hide the weight well. talking about my weight isn't helping much to resolve my shock issues.

lets talk about finding some shocks that can work for my little bike not my fat content. i weigh 82kg and the max carry weight for this little ped is 136kg so that makes me well under its maximum carry weight.

I've been riding this little ped every summer since 2012. I've had new wheel rims and spokes made as the old rims where buckled when i bought the bike. it looked liked the bike had been handled to extremes by over enthusiastic teenagers. wheels where toast.

i put knew brakes and cables on it. i collected a ton are parts for it to be able to keep it going for years to come. the little ped looked rough when i first bought it but know i get thumps up from people on how good it looks.

its my little ray of joy. its the cutest little mechanical thing i ever did see from the 1980s and i was a teen in the 80s so it and me go hand in hand. I've had a lot of stuff fixed on it and all that's left to do is fix the rear shocks. then she is good to go for years to come.

praps you'd be happy to help me with this one last thing pls.

So, this is not about whether you are overweight.

Fisty is the same weight as you but he rides a busa. And he's a fucking giant.

That bike was never intended to carry 13 stone.

forget about my weight you've become obsessed by it and that's not good for your mental health. so if i weigh 82kg and the bike has a maximum carry weight of 136 kg then how can i be considered to big for the bike. your just plain rude nothing more nothing less! there is no need for it here. thanks but no thanks.

This isn't me being rude. Its about you using a wholly inappropriate bike for your weight.

I weight 10 stone and that bike would feel like a kids toy . Even with my weight the suspension would be compressed like fuck and I dread to think what the acceleration (or lack of) is like.

Im 18 stone. I've eaten a few pies in lockdown. That moped would get lost up my arse crack.

EDIT:- I had to have the busa forks reworked because the were bottoming out under braking.

acceleration is great. it goes like the wind up hills and bike rode great with me on in for the past 11 years with zero bottoming out until one of the rear shocks gave out recently. all i need is to replace them. that's all.

you are marking me out as some kind of Gorilla or Russian bear on a kids mini motto bike. I'm 82kg bike has a maximum design carry capacity of 136 kg.

I'm not anywhere near its max carry capacity. my Ebike has a lower carry capacity at 100 kg and carries me just fine with its single rear shock. stop thinking I'm huge. its 136kg max and I'm way under that number. its ok friend. i will thank you for your time and thoughts and leave it parked here.

I reckon that the reason you've noticed it bottoming out is because the shocks have been fucked for years and it was bottoming out as soon as you got on it so you didn't notice how shocking it was.

Now you've lost weight it's not quite bottoming out so when it does you notice.

It's pretty clear Justin, that this fucking lot haven't got a clue.

If the bike spec says it'll take 136 kgs then as you say, you're fine.

You'll have to keep looking elsewhere, as this lot have a fixation.

Sorry, but I can't help either.

WD Forte had the best idea.

So why don't you ride a fucking moped getting shitter?

They are hateful things full of pain and regret and I won't even let my kids ride them because their lack off forward motion makes them dangerous.

Riding one when you weigh much the same as a small planet is just stupid.

(Conversely I have no qualms about them cycling on the road.)

some bikes are used as the family car and its the norm in some countries.

as seen in the video below 6 people on one bike including the family dog and I'm overweight because I'm 82kg where my bike can carry 136kg max.

how does that make me too big for the moped i rode for the past 11 years. for a start, I'm not carrying the whole contents of the house including my pet dog on the back.

its just me one rider 82 kg and I'm not overweight for the bike. the manufacturer says so. you are a hinderance. a pointless useless existence on this platform. for what reason are you here only to be rude and unhelpful.
