So is it a lack of drivers full stop or a lack of drivers willing to be underpaid by transport firms?

Interesting article from January 2016. These matters weren’t being addressed. Looks like Brexit may have had a hand in forcing the issue onto centre-stage where it can’t be ignored.
Quote:
Could it in fact be the case that an oversupply of drivers has led to poor wages and conditions of employment, in turn making it deeply unattractive as an employment prospect?

Transport Operator has questioned ten former truck drivers about the reasons why they left the industry. They all cited stress as a major factor – highlighting unrealistic scheduling and aggressive micromanagement by telematics, overzealous enforcement, and the aggressive or distracted behavior of other road users as key irritants.

Other significant factors cited by a majority of respondents included low wages and/or poor pension provision, and long working hours.

There was, however, one thing they all agreed upon – while they enjoyed driving trucks, none of them had any intention of ever doing it for a living again.

There are offers of £70k/annum for HGV steerers.

So cash is not the problem.

There's been a shortage of drivers since last year.

It isn't a case of a shortage of cash because the consumer will pay, inflation will rise and interest rates will go up, leading to less money in the economy etc etc. I wonder if they've offered the bloke who drove Boris's bus a job?

Left home earlier than usual hoping to miss the rain band coming n from the west. Failed miserably, and then encountered carb icing which I'd forgotten all about. The bike sounded and felt like it was running on 3 as I filtered down the A1, but by some miracle it kept running (even at the stop light at the top of the exit) all the way to the on-site barrier, where it cut out on a closed throttle (as expected). I pushed it half way to the parking area, whereupon it fired up again. Definitely carb icing.

Oh, and in my younger day I hadn't realised how much your hair stops sweat streaming off the top of your head! I'm recovering at my desk now.

Was Dome Cum not the bus driver?

Nah... That's right, he tried to push the bastirts under the bus.

Very few will be on the £70k, most are on £12 ph and a 45 hour week so most are on £28-32k a year. Thanks to cheap foreign drivers wages have fallen through the floor.

This is shocking. Plus working conditions are terrible, there are hardly any lorry parks here, and navigating a tanker truck through London and other major cities must be a nightmare. No wonder we've got problems.

Go and watch some HGV drivers on YouTube.

A few have their own channels and record their day-to-day lives, and it does show that the rates of pay were kept low by haulage firms happy to exploit cheap Euro drivers. And then they have the shitty conditions and trailers that are fucked to deal with. Quite a simple fix; pay people a decent wage.

Bang on the button.
Same with all jobs considered menial.
Tax the billionaires and businesses. I like that it’s possible with a brilliant idea and/or graft that you can live without any financial worries. What I don’t like is too obvious to mention.

I've not considered a career as a HGV driver. It must be hard to turn those trailers in leopardskin kitten heel mules.
But I reckon if a cheap course came up, I might give it a go ...

I actually have the misfortune of knowing this box of frogs.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/618373/Female-lorry-driver-Trucker-of-the-year-award-Kara-Rouse

A pure narcissist & nowhere in her vast array of self promotion channels will you learn how many attempts it took her to pass that test.

God bless her, she did a very difficult & very dirty job for a number of years, whilst juggling her young childrens childcare & she didn't actually physically hurt anyone in the process . . . Well maybe apart from the +£40k damage bill on the leased truck & breaking the heart of the twat that sponsored the whole sorry episode.

She finally met her £millionaire & married him, so all things come to a good ending don't they?

Oh, BTW, I suspect that almost every penny it raised in its charity calendars was spent on increasing the size of its tits.

Why not .. help yourslef help your country.

I was also wondering if there's any demand for 7.5 ton drivers which us old folk can do on a car licence ..

My first proper job was driving one of those, I'd only had my driving licence a few months and applied for a job drivibg what i thought was a little ford escort van for a local fruit and veg farmers coop, i turned up on my first day and was given a set of keys and then pointed at this bluudy great 7.5ton Iveco! Mad, but probably the happiest ive ever been in any job.

^I've driven them a few times, agree it's all good fun so long as you don't go down a dead end without any room to turn around.

Reversing one for a few hundred yards just using the mirrors is a bit nervy.

Also much more fun if you know the weight and height restriction rather than guessing it Laughing as they don't always have the idiot sticker inside.
