G'day Everyone.
Recently picked up a 1982 Suzuki A100 to learn to fix up and learn to ride on.

I'm having trouble finding any manuals for it as they seem to stop at 79. Would much have changed engine wise between those and an 82 model?

The bike is missing the ignition switch. We've had a look and are getting spark, would this indicate that we should be able to kick start it without the ignition?

Cheers

Mine is also a later model.

Most of the information (what little there is..) in Haynes is the same but the wiring did change a little.
A slighly different generator coil arrangement was used although I don't recall exact details (mine hasn't been run for some years - another 'To Do').

IIRC simply unplugging the ignition switch make the ignition circuit 'live'and it can be started as you've seen. It doesn't need a battery to start but you will wish to check the timing (well points gap).
A fresh set of points and condensor will work wonders too. As the points wear out the timing is affected.

Good luck.

The A100 was last made in the 79-80 model year, these final models have the Speedo and ignition switch in one binnacle (same as SB200), a slimmer tank and different side panels. Also have more angular engine cases. An 82 bike will have been lurking on the dealers floor for a year or two that’s all.

Thanks Guys, I have found the owner manual and service manual, haven't got the Haynes one yet.

I'll carry on with what I have until I hit a snag.

I did read another post, not sure if it was here or another forum, that suggested bleeding air from the oil pump as the oil tank is empty. Any suggestions on how to do that?

Yes mine is a 1980.

bleeding makes sense. The pipe from the tank to the pump can be disconnected at the banjo/ you can release that and let gravity do the job. The pipe from the pump is quite short so I think most folk load up some e premix initially and run teh bike and watch that pipe until the air bubbles disappear. They tend to 'tick' by IIRC.

Have you got it started yet?

PS you won't need Haynes if you have factory service manual.

We had it started with some premix in the tank but didnt have anything coming through the oil pump, i was a bit nervous to run it for too long on the pre mix.

I took your advice and loosened the banjo at the oil pup, that got oil from the tank to the pump, but still didnt have anything coming out the pump. Ended up taking the pump off and hooking the drill up to it until oil started coming out, then put it back together to make sure the pump drive was working on the bike. All was good, you're correct, oil ticked through.

Next problem is a little bit of oil coming from where the exhaust connects to the engine. Very Happy

Thanks for the help!

Good work. Sounds like you just need a new exhaust gasket.
Be careful screwing the castle nut back on. it's easy to get it cross threaded and feck up the barrel threads.

Let's have pic of the magnificent machine while we're at it.

Cool Thumbs Up .
I’ll be watching this thread with interest, through my rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.
A100’s
GP100’s/GP125’s
TS100’s

So on and so on all remind me of happy days as a spotty yoof.
Our entire gang/little crowd all had two-smokes, and we’d ride around in our own special cloud Smile .

Looks in good order (not too rusty anyway..)

BTW that's not the original petrol tank. Could be GP100 or similar vintage.

Cheers

Worry about getting the right tank later.
Don’t worry to much About the seat either to start with, get it running first.
Then you’ll have a viable option ie a running machine Thumbs Up .

Stop what ever you’re doing right now and go and work on your bike!
That’s an order! Shocked Smile

Yep that's the plan. Don't have my motorbike license yet so this little project is two-for-one: Learn to fix things, Learn to ride.

It doesn't seem in terrible condition, so we plan on getting it running and road worthy before we worry too much about cosmetics so I'll at least have something to ride.

Top banana Thumbs Up .
Also, don’t let the Power-Rangers put you off.
They’ll tell that it’s shit because it’s old and only has 10bhp, don’t listen.
You enjoy and stay focused on your little two-for-one project Thumbs Up

So after the excitement of getting it running settled i've had a closer listen to the hums and rattles of the little guy and am a little concerned.

There seems to be very fast ting-ting-ting-ting rattle coming from the top end. I've sat a screw driver on it and put it to my ear and im 90% sure that's where it's coming from.

I'm still waiting on the exhaust gasket to arrive, so there is still a little oil dripping from there. I don't know if that, or running to rich would cause the noise. Or maybe the timing/points?

My brother hasn't had much to do with two strokes, but we understand they can be a bit noisy and comments on other forums and youtube are about 50-50, half say replace the piston, the other half say "sounds like a normal two stroke to me".

I'll try get a recording and post up after work.

Could be normal 2T sound, could be little end, could be worse...

Since it takes 10 mins to pop the head and barrel off - take a look.

Checking little end means moving to TDC grasp the con-rod and see if you can detect up down movement on the piston(little end bearing).
Big end test similar.. Youtube if unsure.

Hi all. I am trying to find out how much engine oil my 1979 A100 takes.
I found the specs for a 76 model that said 1.1 litre. Then I noticed on the side of the engine below the fill hole the stamp 650ml.
Would anyone know the correct amount please.

Many thanks,

Thank you v.
So that manual says 750 and the bike says 650. I choose the middle ground, 700cc / ml. Thanks again.

Hi WD Forte. Pedantic is good. You are correct. Gearbox oil it is that I am enquiring about.
Thank you,
