Hey all,

I have only been riding a year or two and just had problems with my falco. I was on the way home and started to smell burnt rubber. I stopped and couldn't see any issue. Was only 500m from home but after 30 seconds the tone of the bike changed to a loud whine.

Stopped and white smoke was coming from my rear right between the two seats. Went to unscrew seat but bike wouldn't turn off even without key inside. Managed to get it to turn off but smoke was getting much worse. Tried to pour water constantly but not much effect. Eventually it stopped and I left it for a couple hours before taking the rear fairing off.

I can see the burnt and melted plastic nut not sure what I am looking at. I am attaching a couple pics to see if anyone can tell me what the issue is.

cheers

That looks like the starter solenoid / relay switch stuck in the on position and cannot be switched off with the ignition key, disconnecting the battery will do this. So you will need to find out why.
It looks expensive. Shocked

I agree that it looks like a solenoid but I don't get the whole couldn't turn it off bit.

Turn off the key and sparks stop even if the starter motor is running continuously.

Don't think the wiring there would short the ignition so.the ignition system would stay active.

15+ year old bike develops wiring problems
quelle surprise!

If the damage is local to the solenoid it shouldn't be that expensive
to fix but it will need someone who understands electrickery to do it.
Just bunging another solenoid on may not get to the root cause.

Thanks for the reply. At first I wasnt getting any electrics, but now it seems to be ok. I wont ride it though. Expensive? The replacement part seems quite cheap or do you think there is an underlying issue?

That's what I am hoping, nothing else seemed to be wrong with it, and the smell and smoke seemed to be localised in one area.

They were known to be underrated for the engine.

There are others that fit from other bike makes, do a search and will bring it up.

Need to make sure that the stator is ok and the reg/rec is ok too. Check all earth points for starter motor etc.

Main Power Relay.
The ignition switch sends small power to the small wires on the relay, that creates a magnetic field which pulls two heavy contacts together and allows big power to surge through those big cables.
If it shorts/fuses/malfunctions in a bad way, the contacts xan weld together, then turning the key off won't have any effect as the machine is now in control of everything. (Skynet, we all knew that it was always only a matter of time.)

Might be expensive but might just cost a new relay.

Possibly ask an auto-electrical to have a shoofti at the bastirt for you. Before it goes up in smoke/ball of fire next time the battery sends power to the relay. Shocked
