My Honda Vision 110 that is. Coming to the end of a long trip with the camper and little scooter and its all falling apart. Laughing

I noticed this smell a few weeks back and I thought it was just water or muck off the road burning on the exhaust but today its dry and I can still smell a horrible burning smell.

There is a hole in the exhaust shield. Could it be to do with that? Rides fine and no real issues performance wise (touch wood)

Any ideas?

LOL! smells like burning plastic or something.

Yes its pretty mucky and the rear tyre not so good. Its been out on tour for four months around Yorkshire, the Sottish Islands and the Lake District and down a lot of muddy paths and lanes these past few weeks.

A burning plastic smell? That could be overheating wires or maybe a plastic panel's got loose and rubbing against something.

Is that heat shield plastic? Is there a hole/leak in the exhaust jetting hot gas onto it and burning a hole in the plastic?

I did wonder if it was something like that. In the photo you can see there is a hole on the shield and yes it is plastic.

Relatively dry today but it still stinks, just not as bad. I think though however its (as someone pointed out) all the shit thats all over it. The exhaust is covered in a layer of what looks like farm yard muck. Probably is.

Engine sweet as a nut, brakes bit warm but I can touch them after a ride so nothing sticking there I dont think.

An obvious candidate that one else has mentioned is
Drive belt or transmission wear/contamination

The variator is constantly rubbing on the belt even if the thing is stationary
It shouldn't smell, but anything starting to degrade/delaminate
can get smelly.

its easy to test this hypothesis by simply sniffing at the air output port (near No3)
to see if the smell is more pronounced

Cheers! A sensible answer. You must be slipping! Laughing

Its not seemed as bad today and its been pissing down most of the day so I dunno. I did get the wife to bend down and have a sniff. Shocked She reckoned it was more round the exhaust area but its right next to the air output port. It only has to last until Tuesday when we finally head home after four months of abuse.

IT did have a new drive belt (supposedly) at 16000 miles (21500 now) which would be early last year I think.

Not sure what to do with it. I reckon it needs a tyre, probably brakes, a new ignition barrel, new mirror and god knows what else for the MOT next month. Engine is so sweet though. I would get another one in a heart beat for the van as its ideal but I dont really want to part with it. Ill maybe get my tame mechanic to check it over as a pretest service or something, see what he reckons.

Stupid question but it's not anything to do with boots or textiles touching the exhaust?

Maybe but I bet you cant carry any of your collection on the back of your camper van. I think that little bike has been to something like 10 different countries and over some of the highest passes in Europe. Maybe thats why its fecked. Laughing

a smell of Plastic..mmh

had similar on a scooter of late

i too worried it was something expensive.

turns out, a plastic bag ( the really cheap shitey ones they give for free) had attached itself to the exhaust at some point, (soon after i parked up, i expect)

then melted to it..

no smell next morning, but that only lasted until exhaust heated up.

took a while to narrow it down.

let it cool a bit, scrapped off what i could.
when cold, chipped away the last few bits.

worth a good look over the exhaust, if it's continuing., imo.
