One of the more remarkable predictions from 2001 a space odyssey, they are using something a lot like tablets with icons of some kind.
Or maybe it's a table top touchscreen
At the time computers had big reels of tape and banks of flashing lights with important buttons.

Palo Alto Research Centre would have been working on a GUI based, mouse operated workstation ( Xerox Alto) around then. They got there long before Apple.

Xerox dropped an enormous bollock on this, they were primarily focused on copier technology and thought it wouldn't catch on - they did release a workstation but it was a standard text based display running CP/M.
