Arguably this is why the British Armed Forces are superior to others in the world. Officers are actually officers not just someone with a different badge on like the Yanks. And they also can't be used as a political tool, none of this military junta nonsense the fuzzy-wuzzies indulge in.

Erm, if the military overthrow the government and her maj is head of the army, that would be a military junta...

If the head of state, in our case that being the Queen, was in command, it wouldn't be. Look up the word "junta". Technical point, but might as well get it right.
If otoh a military officer was in sole command taking no orders from the Queen, then you'd be right.

My mistake, it would be a coup d'état.

Even that term I think would be a little shaky in such an instance. True, the government is democratically elected, but the Queen is still the head of state, elected or not. If she commanded the military to overthrow Parliament and they willingly obeyed...not sure quite what the correct terminology would be. It's probably something that could be argued about ad infinitum and never resolved. I think the UK is a little unique in this regard. We are, after all, the country that pioneered the Parliamentary democracy form of government. I guess that gives us a right to decide what to call such things Laughing

When you say democratically elected, is the House of lords full of hereditary peers still a thing?

Most of them are selected from the great and the god these days.and have lifetime tenure but some still are.

Their powers are greatly diminished these days. They cannot veto the commons and their position as the highest cout of the land has been replaced by the supreme Court.
