I suppose the other way to look at it is if someone's offered you a job it's on them if you're not up to snuff. Life's easier if you can share out the blame ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Got sidetracked into watching a Sotheby's jewellery auction online tonight. OMG
I'm not all that bothered (!) about the ridiculous amounts of money.
I know it could buy hospitals and operations and whatever else, but that will never happen. So I enjoy the spectacle of stupidly expensive auctions.
Can't knock free entertainment, better than Emmerdale.
There's no envy, although yeah ... it would be nice ... but I just like to see the *stuff*. The art and the jewels and the furniture.
It's a magpie-thing I've got.
Bright things.
Shiny, shiny.

I need to understand this "risk" malarkey.
I'm going to be taking minutes in the risk-and-something-something committee as of the new year, part of my new job.
(just one of five committees I shall be busily taking minutes for )
So I shall be spending the holidays reading old copies of minutes and agendas, so that I can start to understand what the actual fuck they are banging on about
But its got to be better than typing about snot. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

It's quite simple. A risk is measured by the likelihood of something happening and the impact it has should it happen. It's usually scored on a matrix (we use 5 x 5) and areas shaded red, amber (sometimes yellow as well as amber) and green according to appetite. You set a metric to measure the levels of likelihood and impact and away you go. The matrix looks like this:
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a7/ac/e9/a7ace9f08b3e20f4fef77d76202bf02e.png
The more areas shaded red and fewer green, the lower the risk appetite, the fewer shaded red and more green, the higher the risk appetite.
Once you've evaluated your risk you need to treat it and that can be done one of several ways:
Reduce it: Apply controls to reduce the likelihood of it happening
Mitigate it: Apply controls to reduce the impact of it happening
Transfer or share it: Pass to or share the risk with someone else - usually via insurance or partnership
Accept it: Self explanatory
Avoid it: Don't do whatever it is that causes the risk
And there you have it, risk management 101.
Apologies for the huge table and the horrible misspelling of likelihood. 'Twas nabbed from the web. |

Three months ago, I started a new job, which means I'm back on PAYE for the first time since the late 90s.
When I started, I was immediately entitled to 7.5 days holiday, plus an extra one for my birthday, so this morning and for the first time in nearly 25 years, I began a week of sitting at home doing sod all and being paid for it.

As we move towards a more progressive, online age, it seems that certain old-school skills are in a state of decline. A fact about which I am glad, in the light of what I've just seen. |
