That is not the worst bike I have seen on here by a long way and I almost like the crossed exhausts. This could look pretty good if finished properly.

For sale because the builder has realised that his exhausts are in the way of the chain...

I've never been keen on IL4's being used for these type of projects - wrong aesthetics and acoustics for this kind of retro thing?

If you are gonna do this kind of retro bike surely a v-twin from a Virago or a Suzuki SV would be the way to go?

He's put a lot of work into the handlebars.

Yeah, although not my kind of thing I like the thought and skill that has gone into the handlebars.

Looks like a collapsed rear shock and speed blocks at a angle and not straight.

That seat!
What fresh hell is this?
I see no rear footrests so did the owner have an enormously fat arse to warrant such ugliness?

The rear disc looks pretty worn
No mudguards (as usual) so that's another box ticked in the fuckwit test.
The tank looks wrong, just plain wrong tilted up like that

Laughing ..and I didn't think it was possible to make an XJ600 pre-div look any worse, and I speak as a man who owned one.

Can I say putting the classic yellow and black Yamaha speed block paintwork on that warrants the perpetrator to a public emasculation and rogering from the biggest gorilla available.

In six months time it will turn up on Ebay again as an unfinished 'cafer racer'/'bobber' project . . . Razz

It's unacceptable in all sorts of ways now. Comfortable big seat, ape hangers, narrow tyres, indicators you can actually see, original...

Quite striking how the practical (well maybe with the exception of the bars) became so unfashionable so quickly.

What this? You say this thread is about fashion? I never considered that before, but now that you mention it, I see your point. At least no one has taken a torch to this one yet. Interesting to see how a hundred quid in "upgrades" can devalue your bike by thousands.

Bottom line is that the eBay seller's post contains no lies. It is a "barn find", and it looks like one; a bike that someone left in a barn to rot. "Not ceased"; funny. The seller did not even take the time to turn the switchgear and clutch lever around right side up. The shift lever does not look up to the task. That bike deserves better.

Funny how the term "barn find" conjures the image of a classic in a time capsule. No, I commend this seller for posting the bike exactly as is. It shows how little he/she really gives a shit. Confused

I bet the centrestand pivot and maybe the centrestand itself is rotten all the way through. No way around that but to cut it off and fit a new one, if so. Don't know if the swingarm pivot will come out, either. Just the state of that gear lever shows it will need a lot of replacement parts. They'll definitely get it working though. The engine is most likely fine, thanks to oil. Just won't be able to keep it original...

Fourteen previous owners!!
Don't know if that says more about the bike, or about the kind of people that were attracted to it. Check out the gravel guard on the headlight. What's that all about?

I reckon it just belonged to a series of younger people, who didn't regard is as an object of desire in their youth and didn't understand the aesthetic. It was a big, man's bike back in the day. All the chrome, the pseudo-Harley look, etc. Kind of a yuppy bike, but desirable even because of that... Very grown-up. It existed in that bubble: you're a successful man, so you go to the dealership and pick out the bike you'd been saving for, and which had been reviewed by all the magazines. Then you're living the life, so you go to the bike meets and you're the man. But this wasn't understood by later generations. How can anyone describe the aesthetics and subculture of a previous epoch? Finally and most recently, someone who'd played a computer game decided to pick up an angle grinder and craft it in the style of a bike he'd seen in a game. Very sad day. He would never know just how sad. However, when he rode it, the noise from that exhaust (just way too short, loud and obnoxious) plus the Ebay seat (hard, uncomfortable) was too much. So he put it on sale, and here we are, now. Spare parts.
