Gen 5 - gear driven cams, throttle response can be snatchy but you get used to it fairly quickly.
Gen 6 - the first VTEC's are usually well past needing VTEC (Expensive) valve checks done, gear driven cams are gone, throttle response much improved.
I would have a 5th gen, I wouldn't touch a 6th. I'd buy a 4th gen over either.
Common to all up to 5th gen. Check collector boxes, they rot. Connectors (R/R, Stator, Earths, and on the 5th gen, the big block tucked in fairing) need cleaning or can lead to R/R, Battery, Stator failure if left unchecked. Plastics range from expensive to unobtainable. Bulletproof if looked after and oil changed regularly.
Soild, reliable, not going to give you any nasty surprises coming from an SV unless you're hamfisted on the throttle. Can hustle surprisingly well for a chunky thing. Chuck on a decent can and it'll sound glorious. ____________________ '98 VFR800 (touring) - '12 VFR800 Crosrunner (Commuting) - '01 KDX220 (Big Green Antisocial Machine) |
