I've spent far too much time researching this and looking at old threads and still none the wiser.
Need insurance ideas and this is not just a straight insurance case so you can stop right there with the "I use Blah Blah Blah because they're great for a completely bog standard bike with absolutely no modifications whatsoever". My bike is, and I shudder to use the term because of the horrible connotations it brings, NON-STANDARD.
Current insurers are taking the piss and claiming that my “vintage” tax exempt bike must by default be worth an absolute fortune because all museum quality, rare, vintage motorcycles are worth a fortune, however my bike is also “modified” which instantly triples the insurance because I might use the wrong spark plug wire or something which will without doubt cause the bike to spontaneously erupt in a fireball killing a busload of nuns and orphans in the process.
In case you don’t know what my bike is think of a rusty bicycle with a lawnmower engine on it and that’s pretty much what you got. As far as “modifications” to my bike every single nut, bolt, component and wire apart from the bare frame has been repeatedly replaced with something completely else, modified beyond reason, or deleted entirely over decades.
The bike (according to the logbook) is an MZ TS250 over 40 years old and has about 20 horsepower out of some sort of hybrid-frankenstein Honda/Chinese/Quadbike engine I cobbled together with a hammer and some glue that can reasonably do a mile a minute when and if required. The bike passes the MOT every time because basically there ain’t much to MOT about it.
Every time I try to explain my bike to a potential insurer they either start adding numbers to the insurance quote or flatly refuse to discuss the matter any further. Surely I am not the last person on Earth to have a bike that isn't absolutely bog standard and in showroom condition. What I have is a beater, and it only requires the cheapest, nastiest insurance available that meets the minimum legal requirements.
So, what insurance is best for a Bitsa Kinardly? |

I'm using bikesure who will at least quote you. For what it's worth, that's who Mouse has his diesel bike insured with too and he's declared all the mods. They didn't even increase it when he swapped out the normally aspirated motor for a TDI. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
