Thought I would start a thread about my Guzzi build now my Ducati is finished!

its a 2001 1100 California, which I am going to build into a custom bike... not sure what yet, its a blank canvas at the moment... here it is how it arrived, and now! I have started to collect parts... a new tank, and a pair of Keihin 41mm FCR carbs and a few other bits...

This will be a slow start as I have some DIY jobs to tick off first... but I couldn't resist making some Bell Mouths using the old spinning method. here is a video of how its done...

Here is a video of how it’s done...

I wonder if you could graft a BMW style swingarm onto one of those with the shaft up the middle of it then fit a prolink style shock. It would look like the rear wheel was just floating about in the breeze out behind the bike

Wouldn't be easy mind.

Same bike? fascinating how deceiving the first pic is with the seat on. Looks like the (sub-)frame is dipped cruiser style yest it's straight.

For any swingarm shenanigans, be aware that the wheel travel may not be limited by the shocks, but by the amount that the drive shaft can flex. So whilst it is tempting to do a monoshock with a linkage and get a lot more wheel travel and far better rear suspension, the drive shaft might not take it.

Ideas-wise, I like it when they're stripped back as much as possible. Big engine and gearbox in the middle, and not much else on the bike.

Up on the hoist for the first time… I have temporarily used a build stand that I have used for Ducati’s, but I will have to make a specific one as this one will impede making the exhaust fit on the bike. First job has been to make some inlet manifolds to fit the carbs… I wanted them angled upwards and inwards, and that took some working out to get the compound angle right! it ended up as 68.5 degrees. As the carb diameter is larger than the head inlet, I needed to use a tapered tube… To do this I turned up a tapered mandrel, and after annealing the alloy tube, I pressed it in with the vice, which expanded the tube by the required few mm. I then turned a grove to accept the lip inside the carb mounting blocks.

the next bit was actually quite difficult… I needed to make the hole on the flange a nice fit on the tube, but at an angle. I deliberately cut the 10mm plate quite large so I could get it mounted on the milling machine at the exact angle. I then bored the hole with an indexable boring head. If that milling machine looks old, it is! I did some work on it a few months ago and found a date… 1929!

Next job was to TIG weld the flanges on, drill the holes, and finally cut to shape.

here is a short video of the manifolds being made...
