Shame about the XT, it really didn't deserve that kind of treatment.

Although I never owned an XT, I developed a soft spot for the bike when Dan wotsisname circumnavigated the globe on one and serialised the story in Bike magazine about 20 years ago.

Over 20 thousand hard miles the XT hardly missed a beat, and when it did, it could be repaired on the roadside or by the nearest backwoods or 'bush mechanic'.

Yeah - it's a bit 'Finbarr Saunders'. I should have used the term 'shade tree mechanic' instead Mr. Green

Dan Walsh? https://www.theridersdigest.com/riders-lives-dan-walsh/

Honestly the only bike/travel writer I've ever really enjoyed. Thumbs Up

To be honest I kinda prefer the exhaust on this than on the "cafe" version. The tank would have to be replaced with a teardrop, with straight bars to give it a sleeker look.

Yes - Dan Walsh! I agree - he was one of the best writers at Bike magazine - he was a really thoughtful and intelligent guy - his articles on bikes were relatively unusual and original for a motorcycle magazine - he had a great turn of phrase and somehow managed to combine motorcycle road tests with interesting commentary on society, politics, music, drugs, sex or whatever was on his mind that week. Yeah - He was in the Hunter S Thompson gonzo school of journalism. Very Happy

He went on another big global road trip on a BMW F650 I think - and from what I remember the last anyone heard of him he was somewhere in South America.

I think guns, tequila (and harder stuff) might have been heavily involved - allegedly.

One of my favorites was when he turned up in a south american village during a celebration, where they made their own alcohol by chewing corn, spitting it into a container and letting it ferment. Said he ended up dancing with the villagers "half-cut on granny phlegm" Laughing

lol! Very Happy Yeah, he was one of the main reasons I bought 'Bike' magazine every month - I never wanted to miss any of his articles, although to be fair the quality of the writing in Bike magazine in that era was very high.

I don't know what the magzine is like these days as it's been a long time since I bought a copy.

It's not a bad magazine except that there is no Ogri anymore Crying or Very sad Not much to differentiate from other bike magazines such as RIDE now though.

I'll have to buy a copy and check it out Very Happy

Shame about Ogri, I guess the cartoonist must have retired, I can't believe they would have given him the boot after all those years.

When I was reading it 'Bike' seemed to be about the 'aspirational' side of biking (litre sportsbikes, trackdays, glamorous continental road trips etc) whereas 'Ride' tended to focus on the practical (all weather kit, commuting, how to buy a used bike etc).

He has indeed retired, to sunny Shropshire…
