Pop it in neutral

Do the flip flop foot thing and off you go.

AKA the "Hendon Shuffle" Wink . Though apparently it's discouraged in advanced riding circles these days - they want you to wait at lights in neutral with front brake applied, right foot on the ground and left foot on the peg covering the gear selector. Then you're instantly poised to flick it into gear for a quick, smooth getaway with no flip-flopping of feet. This even applies when it's a hill start; ie even then you aren't supposed to hold the bike on the footbrake.

The issue for me with being at the front...

1. You miss a gear or fluff a change now you're in the way.
2. Impatient car driver goes early or doesn't see you and hits you.
3. Driver runs a red and hits you as you're out front.

I'm sure everyone views it differently.

No different to a car driver too busy wanking on their phone to notice the green light or stalling out, now they're in the way and the car behind you is likely to twat into the back of you as they're anticipating movement. I'd rather rely on my own skills than someone else's.

I always look over my shoulder at them so I know they know I'm there.

3. Driver runs a red and hits you as you're out front.
That's what good obs are for. You'll be able to see them not slowing down if you pay attention.

Thinking
I could do with a bit of practice on hill starts.
I'm a bit rubbish at those.

Funny how ya never see a supermarket car-park on a hill with a T junction at the top Brick Wall

I see no reason not to practice anything I’m not good at.

…and that’s a lot for me to practice. Very Happy

It’s a bit like people you meet who say ‘I’m awful at reversing so I have to find a space I can drive into’. You are just making things more difficult for yourself by not dealing with the issue. Same with emergency stops, you are hopefully rarely called upon to do one, planning and obs should negate the need most of the time, but when you really have to it doesn’t hurt to have practiced.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has been to empty parking spaces to practice slow maneuvers, emergency stops, hazard avoidance, and all that malarky after passing your licence?

I have been few mid-range general rides on A and B roads but not to do any practice...........A lot youtube videos seem to suggest new riders should keep practicing this till it becomes second nature. what say you?

Thanks

To be honest I went through the 125 route even though I had a rough time when riding the 125 I ended up practicing as much as possible on car parks. That much so when I went to do my Mod 1 training on the 600 at the time I got told off for going to slow at slow speed riding. Like others have said you will get used to it with more riding but if you feel like you need practice don't hesitate to go down to a car park and get some in. It will only help and not hinder your ability.
