Scammers guessed my credit card number – and they could guess yours too

The first six digits of a credit card number signify the card network and the issuing bank, while the final digit is the Luhn algorithm checksum.”

That means they only have to guess seven numbers, while that final Luhn digit helps verify whether the rest of the card number is valid.

Only had to guess 7 numbers - why don't they just play the lottery FFS Laughing

Domino’s did request the CVV of the first card but that, too, was guessed

Oh, I thought they just had to guess 7 numbers?

Presumably the expiry date of the card was a lot easier a guess than the 7 digits - in the right order - on the main card number, along with the 3 digit CVV from 999 possible combinations.

Jesus.

I don't think it's that simple. I have accidently used my brothers debit card on JustEat when I forgot to switch it back to mine one time and even though we have totally different CVV numbers, it went through and charged him even though I put in my own CVV.

Accepting that the CVV isn't sometimes used as the verification it should be, they still have to guess 7 numbers - in the correct order - and the date combination. I suspect strongly that this isn't a 'guess-hack'.

It's not like there's only one single 7-digit number they're looking for though, is it? There'll be tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands? who knows.

Can these people fire numbers systematically at a paying system like Dominos, until they come across ones that work? Like a hacker using a dictionary attack to get pass an online password? You'd hope that a payment system would detect and block that, but what do I know?

Doesn't that just demonstrate that the likes of Dominos aren't actually using the CVV then?

The cards details will have been checked / verified using the same tools that autoshops use and then the card details will be sold on an autoshop for probably just a few pounds / dollars / dollarydoos. Shhh!
