Okay, so the front wheel was wonky, the brakes and gears didn't work and the rear bearing's collapsed but 15mins of wrenching sorted all but that last one. Threw on a mudguard that was kicking about, perfectly usable bike.
Which begs the question: why do people steal bikes? Kleptomania?! ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Yeah, bit of a rant. Had an acquaintance with a proper rat-bike, locked up at the station while he went up town on the train and came back to (obviously) find it stolen. Stealing a bike to sell on is one thing but taking the time to cut a lock off a bike of zero value seems like mental illness ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Agreed.. I've had a few real scrap commuters pinched form outside my house - generally after forgetting to lock them though.
Free bike - easy -no twat knows how to fix these days and even if they do parts are expensive (to them) compared to buying a new Chinesium machine. I mean you can pick up a new bike from Halfords for about 150 quid which is approx the same price as 30 years ago.. but how long will it go for? The component quality can be shocking I used to buy plastic pedals on my commuter but after a couple of months they're fucked. I now buy old decent secondhand parts.. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Agreed. My missus had an Apollo which had been left in a slightly damp garage for a couple of months, and the BB, freewheel and pedal bearings are all unsaveably screwed. I replaced the pedals and oiled the freewheel till it started behaving (I don't have the tools to take it apart), and then the BB jammed solid (presumably with a lump of rust in it somewhere). After seeing the state of the pedal bearings I'd believe anything.
Also, my brother just bought a Hoy bike for his son, and while setting it up, the freewheel bearings are terrible. I had to put slack in the chain for it to move freely. Really not impressed on a brand new bike. ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR, '00 VFR800FI Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)

I think this dovetails into my "do people not do stuff any more" rant. As in generations of kids who haven't got grubby helping dad out on the car/motorbike/bicycle/etc. 'cos things have been bought instead of repaired.
Back in my day we were so poor... etc. but seriously if I'd ridden my old chopper into a wall as a kid dad would have straightened out the wheel and I'd be handing him the spanners. Mend and make do.
Today the kid would just get a whole new bike And when the kid grows up they still feel entitled to a new bike - whether paying or stealing is a secondary aspect.
And just to cross-contaminate threads even more I'd have more respect for the Extinction Rebellion wankers if they banged the drum for compulsory evening classes in household repairs and light engineering than... whatever it is they think the world needs.
Oh dear, maybe I need a lie down or a nice cup of tea. ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |
