working on a friends bathroom shower. suspect poor function is due to low pressure
on the cold feed (gravity system header tank). There are service valve that isolate the bathroom on both hot (gravity copper cylinder) and cold. Has anyone known a service valve to fail by significantly reduce flow?
It worked oK once apparently..

Had a gate valve fail recently. Shut the water off and it wouldn't open fully afterwards - the spindle just kept spinning. Had to go out and find the street stopcock and change the valve.

In this case it a simple screwdriver 1/4 turn ball type..

Some of those have a significantly reduced bore. You can get full 15mm bore types that allow full flow.

I've only once in many years of using ball valves seen one fail like that. It was an old type with the ball in a plastic lining rather than seals and the lining turnrd partially in the valve, blocking off some flow.

So, yes, depending on the valve construction it is possible.

Thanks, noted - that fact it worked Ok once makes me think the bore size is not the (whole) problem.

I was thinking along those lines or perhaps some dislodged debris stuck in it..

Cheers

Are we talking thermostatic valve?

I looked at mates shower near Warwick that hadn't worked in ages and no one seemed to have a clue why
the supply was OK but I took it apart and found the local hard water had scaled up the innards around the mixer valve.
Some pretty small holes in there

Norf Beds is in hard water area so I'd have it in bits and
soak all the gubbins it in some kettle descaler

Bristol isnt too bad for lime scale but do get a wee bit of it
occasionally
I find Oust and hot water works well on the old kettle
and even dropped the shower valve in some once.

It may be scale build up in the ball type service valve.
Tip:
before turning off the mains water prior to removing/checking the service valve
FILL THE KETTLE !!
V important that

Electric shower?

They usually have a gauze sock filter on the cold water inlet that can get clogged and massively reduce flow. Had that happen a couple of times with them. Very easy to get at. Remember to isolate the electric before you open it.

Yes, ball valves can fail/leak. Normally pretty easy to replace, just use the nuts and olives from the old one and a good few
layers of ptfe tape and just replace the guts. In my experience the full bore valves have a lever rather than a slotted head
control and usually aren't chromed. Fine for use in a loft or something but not especially nice to look at if it's on view due
to it's bulky design.

Thanks all..

Eventually traced lack of flow to a gate valve further upstream near header tank that 'someone' had turned (almost - but not quite) off.. FFS.

All very ancient pipework with spurious poor quality work additions. Still can't figure out why hot flow was good and cold not..from the same tank. Not sure I can be bothered to investigate further Confused
