You should be able to tell if the rear is aligned by eye, lying on the ground, using the lined up edges of the rear tyre as a reference, but string or a straight bit of wood is how I did it in the early days.

I bought one of those....waste of money.Yes,it showed that the back wheel was aligned correctly,so I misaligned it out of proportion and it still showed the wheel was correctly in place.This may well have been because the axle was loose and the clamp goes onto the sprocket.If the sprocket has a carrier with rubber dampers it would be giving a false impression.

As a quick check,I would look to see if the tyre has equal space either side in the swing arm.

You may have dominant eyeball syndrome. You are looking for hazards on your left side like dead cats and suicide pigeons that are subconcsiouly making you steer.
