Brace yourself: if you thought the Reeeeeing was bad when Trump got elected...

Usually with a takeover the new boss wants to make a load of redundancies but if he's lucky all the activist employees wastrels will quit in protest.

I don't use it myself, but like it or not, it is important what happens to such platforms, even to those who don't use it.

If I had a spare 44 billion down the back of the sofa I'm sure I could think of better things to buy than a stupid media platform.

this isn't my experience

My Space died a death and nobody flinched - don't get me wrong, I personally was pissed off because I had a few things up there that I didn't have copies of...but like everyone else, you just move on and suddenly it's ten years later and it's barely a footnote in the evolution of social media (despite the millions and millions of users it attracted on a daily basis)

Same with Friends Reunited and various others

I don't think it IS important what happens to some, and possibly all, of these platforms

they may seem on the surface to be a kind of digital archive that will be around for decades to come, and permit all sorts of digital archaeology of opinion and commentary, but in fact I think they're inherently unstable, hugely prone to web-rot and blighted by the fact that 99.9999999% of the content is mindless shite that buries the odd nugget of wisdom - it's basically virtual chip wrappings

I still don't understand how twitter is still relevant. I don't personally know anyone that still uses it and it seems to be just full of famous people seeking attention or left wingers complaining about nonsense. It could shut down and the only impact I'd notice is news articles will stop using it for quotes Laughing

Yes, in terms of the content and historical value.

Not so much in terms of ‘whipping up the mob’ or controlling the narrative. Look at ‘Fake News’ Trump.

I was never on MySpace or Friends Reunited but it struck me as social media in it’s infancy. Now it is very much a news source as opposed to reminiscing about the old days at school.

Must be handy to have a platform that reinforces your point of view, be that ‘electric cars are the future, buy mine’, or ‘I was elected, but it was stolen’.

It could die tomorrow and the plus side of that is that the voice it gives to morons and idiots would be instantly silenced.

If it disappeared, then it wouldn't have any importance - that seems pretty obvious. But while it is there, I think it has a huge impact. For one thing, it affects the way politicians think, and what they do affects all of us.
And if it disappeared, another internet platform would just take its place. Legacy media has lost trust among huge swathes of western populations. Something else will fill that void. Currently, it is internet social media sites. Yes, there's a lot of crap on them, a lot of idiots, but it still has huge influence over many people from all walks of life. You can say it shouldn't, but it does. We're stuck with it. I think to say it doesn't matter is burying your head in the sand.

For me at least it matters not who owns it. TwattyTrump and Elongated Musk have as much right to a voice as anyone else.

I still think it's a pointless viper pit and the main use Is for allowing drunk celebs and politicians to show their true colours.

Remember Musk and that Diver from the Philippines who he called a paedophile.....

Might not that be quite important?
It doesn't matter what you or I think of it. If it influences millions of people, we are indirectly affected by it.

Agreed. Twitter will become like the youtube comments section.

If you read very carefully it's not so much Musk won't censor stuff on Twitter but that he will be open about how it's done. At the moment we can only hand-wave about the Left-wing bias of Twitter staff and its effects.

I still think he could have put that money to better use than buying Twitter.

Maybe more Space X and investment towards a Mars mission.

That's more a comment on Twitter than Musk's spending habits Sad

I'm considering getting a media channel together for folk who avoid FB, Reddit and Twatter.

Anyone want to join.

It will be cool.
