Time was when you rarely saw a hedgehog lest it was flattened on the road, but apparently they’re in decline in parallel with the decline of hedgerows and the use of insecticides. I suspect the increase in predatory badgers (you never ever saw even badger roadkill in my youth) may have something to do with it too, although I’m not sure why badgers appear to be thriving.

In the last few years I’ve seen 3 to 4 hedgehogs at a time in my garden. This year, none so far. Sad

As for this fucker, I’d kick him too. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-61174203

Got a couple of these for them to either hibernate in or just use as feeding stations: https://www.arkwildlife.co.uk/product/royal-hedgehog-house/

I also get hedgehog feed pellets and mealworms from them.

Went to Hull last night and saw about half a dozen dead badgers on the roads.

Front gardens into driveways.
Walls instead of hedges.
Fences with no gaps.
Fewer compost heaps.

Worms, slugs and insects form the main part of badgers diet...but will scoff anything.

I think the population has been steadily increasing since they became protected in the early 70s and indiscriminate culling stopped.

Apart from the odd very brave fox (badgers can be vicious bastards) I'm struggling to think of a natural predator for them and they have developed a pretty successful strategy for keeping away from humans, so numbers seem to be on the rise.

Like you, I don't ever remember seeing them as roadkill when I was younger, but in the last few years it's not unusual to see dead ones in double figure numbers on trips to Southampton (especially on the more Southerly stretches of the A3) and I regularly see them alongside faster roads in Kent.

Having said that, the only live one I've ever seen was at night on Shooters Hill in London, when I stopped for what I thought was a run over dog in the road - as I got out of the car, it stood up, had a shake and lumbered off into the woods, sturdy looking thing, I wouldn't fancy tangling with one.

I see roadkill badgers all the time. There’s normally a fresh dead one on the M74 slip road at Hamilton/ Motherwell junction every other morning. Also seen multiple in one journey down the A725.

Yeah. They do.

For your Mom.

OP.. It was an easy mistake for Mr. C U N T Herring to make. He had had a heart attack, was 'reportedly' a good guy and he thought the hedgehog was a cat.

We've been finding hedgehog poo in the garden over the last couple of weeks, and on Friday night were woken by the sound of two getting jiggy wid it.

I always try and persuade the clients to let me put an access hole into a panel if possible, keep it somewhere out of the way and make sure it's too small for a dog (or fox, although those bastards are slippery little fuckers).

Most will play along, only takes two minutes to cut in a square and nailgun a reinforcement around it so the integrity of the panel isn't compromised.

Obviously you can't please everyone, but I've found most customers are happy to play along once you've pointed it out. Given how cynical I am generally it's been honestly surprising how many people are actually prepared to consider wildlife, most of them wouldn't piss on the neighbour if they were on fire so the fact they'll consider the benefits for something they may never actually see often perplexes me Laughing

As i have photos of badgers frollocking in my front garden I'll not worry so much about sealing the back garden to prevent escapage of the hounds.

our regular visitor usually pops in for food around 9:30 at the mo.
he gobbles up the hedgehog food we put down for him then he wanders over to the bird feeder and mops up the spilt seed.

We've just found out we have a resident badger... never had one before and seems very odd as it's very much a suburban garden - God knows where it's come from. But after finding a fence panel mangled and a hole dug beneath it, the neighbour pointed her security camera down the garden and it's definitely... a badger.

What's the deal with badgers, then? Are we supposed to cuddle them like hedgehogs, or splatter them like rats? Do I need to get rid somehow to avoid dying of TB? Seems little point in even blocking the holes under the fence, as it'll just dig another one...

They are a protected species generally apart from when the tories are pandering to the farming lobbies and announcing cullis.

Home made hedgehog feeder Mk2. Longer, lower, and three doors instead of two so there’s always an escape route. The Mk1 served well for five years or so but has now become brittle.
