Hi all,

So yesterday I decided to start removing what was a layer of black/rusty type rubbish from my downpipes. They were minging!

Wire brush attachments were the first port of all, and considering the bolts attaching the thing to the engine look a mess, I decided not to try and take them off. After a first going over they looked ok.

So today i've applied some harpic, and made sure after leaving to soak for ten mins they look a bit better.

From the pic i've attached, you'll see theres some bits still left to do. Some are stubborn and wont come off, and some are in areas I'm struggling to get the drill into.

Does anyone have any other magic solutions to getting these things clean?! (Without taking them off!)

Thanks in advance.

i'd be careful about using Harpic - which has hydrochloric acid in it; it can damage stainless steel and although it cleans it, it can actually make it more prone to rust and discolouration - it's pretty aggressive stuff

Treat the rust with Jenolite. Start the bike and the parts that are now brown rust will turn black. It's not a great appearance but it will make your exhaust last a lot longer than if neglected.

Thanks guys.

@Trevor, yes I thought it might be. Although I gave it a little go, letting it rest for a short period before rinsing thoroughly. I don't think i'll use it again! Neutral

@Bhud, thanks for the recommendation. I'll give it a look!
