Cant be arsed to look up the details but
Doesn't claiming 'vehicle of historical interest' exemption
that many of these guys regard as a selling point
require it not to have been substantially modified from stock?

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/historic-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria/historic-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria#acceptable-changes

Quote from above link...
Eligibility
You do not need to get an MOT if the vehicle was first registered more than 40 years ago and no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years.

Axles and running gear
Alteration of the type or method of:
suspension
steering
is a ‘substantial change’.

I don't think I've ever seen a bobber-chopper 4-cylinder hardtail with a Q-plate, to be honest. I know they exist though.
I suppose, if quizzed, the owner would just say some previous owner did the mod, more than 30 years ago? Anyway, I think there might be a bit of leeway in these times, with the lack of resources to police the strict letter of the law. I know that if you look at those old videos of Kent Custom Bike Show, there were lots of Q-plates in attendance. The MSVA looks like a lot of hassle.

You know what - look at those engine mounts.
Don't they look identical to most 80s Kawasakis? I wonder about this, because no fabrication work is apparent from these clear pictures, to mount the engine in that frame. I wonder which engines can be swapped in and out of which standard 80s Kawasakis.

The change to unmodified for historic vehicle status is quite recent (last ten years?) and would opply to things that became eligible after the law change oc ur3d.

I used to have a Q plate TZR250, it was a Japanese import, I've no idea how it ended up on a Q, it didn't make a dot of difference to my insurance back then, (that was about 24 years ago though).
It was advertised in a free ads paper, I was bit dubious at first when I went round to see it but it was in pretty good condition, started and ran well, the V5 was all in order and it was a bargain.

I'd already owned it for a while before I left a job with which I had company car and was car-less for a few months, that little TZR or 'Teezee' as I used to call her took me 14 miles to and 14 miles back from work every day through snow sleet rain and anything else the weather could throw at us that winter, always started first kick, never missed a beat.

I only ever had one incident, about 7.00am one February morning, the weather was freezing sleet and snow, I was taking it really careful all the way, all went well until I pulled into the work car park, as soon as the tyres went from tarmac road surface to concrete car park the bike just slid away from under me at walking pace, my feet were skidling around doing the slippery dance trying to pick it up, my then boss was just getting out of his car, he saw what happened, came running over to help, he went down on his arse before he got to me, then apparently it turned into a comedy sketch to watch the two of us slipping and sliding around trying to pick up the little TZR and get it across the car park, no damage sustained in the end though.
I ended up swapping it for a van. Rolling Eyes

Q plates used to be for specials and imports or not registered at the time of purchase/ first use.

Then it changed and registations were allocated one that matched as best as possible the year or manufacture and Q plates became used for bitza's where a year of manufacture couldn't really be identified.

TZR250... I could do something with one of those, let me tell ya (or at least, I think I could). In my hands, etc. What an absolute beauty of a bike. Sportsbikes will never again be as beautiful as those late '80s Yamahas.

It's quite cool and in running MOT order might be worth 500 quid but yikes not as it stands!

Not sure he has the weight right - 120kgs! About the same as a Suzuki X7 !! Unless it's the tungsten framed model.
