Hi all,

I've recently switched to a 2017 R1200GS Adventure and have spotted what looks like it could be a bent engine bar, on the left of the two cylinders. I dont know if I could pick the brain of any other GS owners out there, but presumably there should be a gap between the cylidner head and the crashbar and rubber? I've attached a couple of photos to illustrate!

Thanks in advance.

Prognosis seems likely -any scrapes or dents on the presumed bent one?

Presumably it got dropped in some sort of off road adventure, likely on the pavement outside the local hipster cafe that does a good latte?

Yes, I'd agree with both of you! Very Happy If it had a drop on the current bars (which looks likely) it hasnt marked them. Thank you!

Don't the big aluminium panniers full of the Waitrose shopping take the brunt first?

Fuk.... here we go again.

The losers and their vitriolic hate for the 2 wheel Panzer-Vaggon. Cool

Probably dropped outside the Motorrad Dealer's.
The service desk staff would probably have had to, hurriedly, put the chocolate digestives away, as the mourners would have scoffed the lot.

I have some hard plastic guards that cover the lower half of the valve covers on my R1150. There is very little clearance (~2mm) between the guard and the cover. They protect the valve cover from scrapes and road damage, but on one occasion, a car bumper hit the guard and knocked it into the valve cover. Fortunately, the impact just put a mark on the valve cover and there was no resulting damage or leak.

There appears to be an air gap between your GS guard and the valve cover. You can leave it alone, or if it really bothers you, hammer it out the next time you have it off for service. Of course, the hammer method risks further damage to the guard. You'll have to try it to find out.

Yes. My assumption is that the 'air gap' between the rubber bumper and the top of the cylinder head is intentional, on both sides of the bike. So it does look like it was dropped or nudged at some point.

Will get it sorted. Thanks all Thumbs Up

I've had a plethora of bikes over the years, now the GS. Each to their own, I love it!

This. I have an RS with similar guards, rather than a GS; but mine is the same.

It's been on an mx course (last bcf bbq) so it's not an exaggeration.

If you insert a pry bar in there and try to bend the crash bar out, bearing on the valve cover, you'll probably crush the valve cover. Don't do that, it's a bad idea.

But after looking more carefully at your photographs, me thinks two or three good hammer blows would definitely gain you some additional clearance between the crash bar and valve cover. A lead-shot (dead blow) mallet should be sufficient to apply the needed force without disfiguring the crash bar.

Take both crash bars off and mirror them together, base to base. It should be apparent where the odd one is tweaked.

Hmm, not necessarily - the cylinders on a boxer engine aren't aligned with each other...

No need to beg, mate. I got it covered. At 68 years of age, my right arm looks like Popeye's (and it's not from grabbing handfuls of throttle). Hair growth on the palm of my hand began to affect my motor skills and dexterity. I had to quit my job as a brain surgeon. Too many failed lobotomies, you know.....I know you know. Wink
