Actually that is for 'new' plates. Old style (old font) plates get a slighly longer distance as a check (I thought 22m but may be 25m).

To be honest the legal minimum. Is a minimum. Some of people's driving is so awful its dangerous and its down to the fact they have poor eyesight.

Tbh being able to read a number plate at 20m is a shite way to test eyesight and doesn't take into account a massive number of eye conditions.

Just remember, when someone says 'sorry mate, I didn't see you' it hurting a lot more on a bike than it does in an hgv so most motorcyclists would be in favour of tightening of the eyesight rules.

Some of them cant even see a hgv Thumbs Up

You didn't have your glasses on when you watched a couple of people do an eyesight test, did you?

Why would there be a couple of people doing their sight test at the same time?

I stayed for a little while because it didn't look right, I drive a 16.5 metre HGV so I have a good idea what 20 metres looks like without measuring it, I confirmed the measurement when i got home, incidentally I don't need glasses and am good up to just under 2 Hgv lengths.

Ah right that gives everything some context; from your username I was expecting a teenager. Laughing

Someone might know how precise and exact distances are when measured between two points on Google Maps satellite images, it's not going to be 100% perfect but how does that work when it's a distance of 20 or 25 meters?

Do they go to a measured 20 meter mark and ask you to read a numberplate that's exactly 20 meters away or do they point out which car they want you to read the number plate of when you're still walking towards the measured point as I suspect that it's a minority of cases where the person needs to get as close as possible?

You can do HGV as it used to be called at 18 now so he could still be a teenager.

When I was an ADI I had many pupils take they eye test there and none failed, because I had checked them first as should all tutors, however if you do fail, and some do, you can ask for the distance to be measured correctly with a tape measure and retake the test. That test station is a good fair testing station in my experience.

I have a feeling this lad is trolling boys. Nobody get's this upset in reality on behalf of two random blokes that he randomly sat and watched at a DVSA test centre.

Someone made a sock puppet for a laugh on a quiet day?

I passed at this test centre, I dont remember the distance being in any way an issue

I dont think a measurement on google maps will be that accurate

Go down there and get the tape measure out

You are really missing the point, the legal requirement is 20 metres, so would you be happy if plod stopped you for speeding at 22 mph in a 30 mph( 25% under the speed limit) the LEGAL requirement is 20 metres, how many have they failed because they have used the wrong distance, its not a case of whether you can read one at 25m or not, if someone fails this test because of the wrong distance, they have WRONGLY failed.

Nice attitude

Eh?

Are you slagging off your own post?

Apologies for resurrecting and old thread but I am absolutely flabbergasted at the OP's attitude:-

The bottom line is that the OP is (or at least claims to be) an HGV driver and licenced to drive a 16.5m truck. 16.5m = 44tonne truck and at up to 60mph, and he/she can only just read a number plate at 30mtrs! Frightening.

It's might be legal but I don't want to be anywhere near the OP on the open road or in a delivery yard.

It wouldn't surprise me if the DVLADSADVSA got the measurements fucked up

But if you cant see things at that distance, get off the road, some dozy fuckers cant even prepare to move when a massive combine with flashing lights on is approaching them
