After a bit of help, the gf's bike seems to have developed a fault on the starting side somewhere, where it's not starting.
Last time it happened was this morning, I've already checked the battery\charging and all seems fine. With the key out, the battery was at around 12.5v, dropped to around 12.2v with the ignition on, and wouldn't start, sounds like the starter was trying, but didn't have enough umphf. Let it charge on the optimate for a little bit, and tried it with 12.5v in the battery with ignition on, and it still wouldn't go, although it was close to firing. It eventually went with a jump start from the other bike.
I'm thinking it's the starter, is there anyway to test this to confirm it? Or is it likely to be something else. ____________________ 2010 Kawasaki ER6-f - Given to the Mrs.

I have a battery that reads relatively okay values voltage wise (12.4v), but the bike stalls when the lights are turned on, and mis-fire when the indicators are on too long.
However, It's still failing- voltages are one thing, but the 'capacity' of a battery is another.
EDIT: Obviously <1,500rpm in my case the charging circuit is not in operation - Hence my own problem. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Nobby has a point here. Once the engine has started, the charging system provides 100% of the current used by the vehicle. Charging voltage, being higher than battery voltage, forces current backwards through the battery from positive to earth. The battery becomes just another load on the charging system, like the headlight, taillight, and ignition. ____________________ History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men - BOC |
