Happy Sunday all….

So today I’ve replaced the seal on one of my forks, dismantled fine and the seal went in great.

Coming to put it back together, I insert the damper rod, spring and insert the bolt in the bottom to hold the damper in place. Once that bolt is in place, I can’t extend the fork to insert the main spring, spacer and top cap.

Am I doing something wrong? The spacer protrudes about 3 or 4 inches above the top of the tube and I can’t compress the spring to just get it to catch.

Am I missing something/doing something wrong!?

Have you put the fork leg back into the yoke to hold it still whilst you push down on the spring and cap?

Released the preload to it's minimum?

I can't even get close enough to the thread with the top bolt.

So I put the damper rod in, fork fully extended and the rod doesnt go anywhere near the bolt hole at the bottom. It's only when its compressed does it go near. And when its attached via the bolt, the fork leg won't budge to extend again...

I feel as though the damper should come all the way out of the bottom of the fork leg but its too wide for the hole.

This the first time i've attempted this and i've made sure to put everything back in its correct order. So please accept my apollogies if my explanations of parts and or procedures are some what off.

I'm trying to learn to do things myself but hitting a few snags as you can tell...

Many thanks for your reply.

Chris.

You could try answering the questions.

What year?

You do know you need to put a quarter of the weight of the bike, you, any passanger and potential luggage on it to compress the spring?

You need to put a LOT of weight into doing this. I fitted K Tech springs to my VFR and had to make a homemade fork spring compressor, put my entire 17 stone weight onto it and then get my girlfriend to do up the bolts while I held it together.

If I was doing this on any sort of regular basis I'd invest in a fork spring compressor.

Sounds like the damper rod is getting hung up on something in the stanchion. Take it apart and see how you put a washer in the wrong place.
