I have been looking at bikes for a bit of fun and this came up fairly local to me.

My question is, how can it be legal to be used as a learner bike if it is an import?

Surely at that age it would be a full power bike.

I am not too clued up on stuff like this, hence the question. Smile

Depends on where it was imported from. Most western countries had similar restrictions requirements back then. Europe especially. That's the thing about the eu. Make trade easy by making sure that everyone is playing by the same rules....

Thanks mate, I guess that questions would need to be asked about where it was imported from.

I know that Aprillia and Cagiva are almost always full power if they are unoffical imports but wasn't sure about the Jap stuff.

Most people's definition of "learner legal" starts and ends with it being a 125cc. There's a decent chance it's not, strictly speaking, learner legal.

Definitely more than 14.6hp. Mine would do 75mph back in the day with my 6'3 of gangly sail aboard. Head on the tank though obviously. Very Happy Maybe about 20hp?

How much is it actually tested though by insurance companies / DVLA etc? Has anyone actually been made to dyno a bike, and got screwed if they were over the power limits?

Looking at his other listing he also selling a few other imported 125's as learner legal.

An Aprillia AF1 Futura for instance.

I think you're much more likely to get away with it if the bike is tuned/modified over the limit, and would require a dyno to prove, rather than a bike that left the factory that way. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the 90s 2t 125s are flagged as "not learner legal" on the insurance databases. But I don't know if that's true.

Nope they aren't. Still considered to be learner legal because they were sold restricted to 12bhp.

Fair enough, well I didn't do anything to derestrict mine, presumably it had been done by a previous owner. My NSR was a german import, and restricted in the electronics, but it only lopped 5mph off the top speed (and it didn't have the UK restriction in the exhaust etc.) so I just left it alone.

I doubt if many cops or insurance companies would have a scooby whether that was UK learner legal or not.

And I certainly can't see either bothering to put it on a dyno.

In fact, the only thing that would put me off that is the utterly ridiculous price for a 26 year old 125. Laughing

Teenagers have been tuning 50s and 125s ever since they were restricted, and long may it continue Very Happy - I seem to remember that cutting the pedals off mopeds was against some law or other back in the 1970s.

A friend at college (so many, many years ago) turned up on a Vespa, being 16 it was a moped yet somehow a 200cc engine had found its way in. Another had a TS50er that became strangely quiet one day, turns out that had inexplicably grown to 73cc. And both were faster than my stock KH100ex...
